    Mossberg 500

So I am considering a Mossberg 500 to use for home defense. I currently have a G26 in jail that I will use as my CCW. I plan on getting a .40 for home as well. Been doing pros and cons for my situation about a shotgun. Also, there's so many different models of the 500 that I don't even know where to begin. I have experience shooting a plain Jane 500 (prior Navy) but nothing else aside from that.

    Pros
    -It's a shotgun
-Easier to hit target in critical situation
    -It's a shotgun

    Cons
-Live in apartment complex so I am worried about deep penetration and endangering neighbors.

Any advice and guidance you guys could share with me?

For HD, get the 18" barrel. Shots under 50ft (most indoor shots) will have a negligible spread so don't assume "I don't have to aim."

I was planning on the 18.5 barrel. Just not sure about the different versions they have. I've never shot one with a pistol grip so I'll have to go try one out to see how it feels. I know I still have to aim. We trained shooting the 500 mostly around around 15-20ft while I was in the military. What I meant by easier to hit a target is because the spread, although negligible, covers more surface area than one bullet.

Pistol grip is worthless on a Mossberg 500, the tang safety is perfect and intuitive for a traditional stock. If you want to make it a little smaller or more maneuverable Hogue makes a great short lop overmold stock.

I would consider a persuader model for the extra capacity, however it can be tough to practice with it regularly so maybe a combo with a 28" barrel for sporting clays. A lot of ranges limit the styles of shotguns used for skeet and trap.

18 inch smoothbore Mossy 500 is the first gun I ever bought and the last gun I would ever sell. Nothing is more versatile. 8 rounds of buckshot is a plenty potent for home defense, slugs will take anything that walks in North America, and I bought a vent rib barrel that works for upland game.
You can buy home defense loads that will be less likely to over penetrate than common handgun rounds. You could shoot bean bags, rock salt, rubber balls. Nothing...Nothing is more versatile.
And I am not even shotgun guy. I have ARs, AKs, Glocks, 1911s....But if I had to chose one...

^^^^^ agreed 100%. My Mossberg 500 is my go-to HD weapon. Knowing that one shotgun shell is roughly equivalent to a full handgun magazine of hits says a lot.
