As SB Pete {reply #16 } was stating..... during the War Between the States single,double and triple cannister was pushed by five pounds of black powder from a 3" smoothbore Napoleon cannon The balls were 3/4" in diameter and packed in a canvas bag about 8" long.It had an effective range of 250 yards. The spread at 250 yards would be about 50 yards wide. One straight on shot could eliminate an entire Company.
