Suggestions for lefty wife shotgun

Looking to get my wife a home defense shotgun. She is a lefty and not an avid shooter. With that said due to her not being an avid shooter i think a pistol grip would be beneficial the problem is I don't see any (didn't look to hard and not gonna break the bank if some buckly one exists) pistol grip lefty shot guns. So my question is how bad if at all does it suck for a lefty to shoot a right hand shotgun? Better to go pistol right handed or no pistol left handed.

She should be fine. I'm left-eye dominant & left handed, and I only own right-handed shotguns.

Only thing that won't be set up properly would be the safety on some models - Remington 870 is the best example. You can buy a left-handed safety, or just ignore the safety & store with an empty chamber.

Also, if you're referring to pistol-gripped shotguns without a shoulder stock, I would strongly suggest not going this route. It's a lot more difficult to shoot a shotgun without a stock proficiently. Just my .02.

Maybe a Keltec KSG? It is bottom ejecting and should work ok for both right and left hand shooters.

Have you tried taking her out to do some Skeet and Trap shooting? She might like it enough to become a hobby for her. My wife wasn't into shooting early on either but she now has a full set of shooting gear and her own Benelli M2.

Skeet and Trap fields tend to have other female shooters and that can encourage your wife to participate.

If your wife is really not into shooting, perhaps consider a AR-15 instead? It is heck a lot easier to handle compared to a shotgun.

I'm left-handed and shoot a Beretta 1301 competition 12ga shotgun without issues. the Beretta has a reversable safety that cna be swapped for left-handed use, and is in front of the trigger guard so that your trigger finger doesn't accidentitly enage the safety if you don't reverse it.

it has shims so that you can adjsut it for cast-on, which makes it comfortable for lefties. cast-off shotguns (default for right handed) will be harder to aim when shooting from the left side.

having the ejection port, charging handle, and bolt release on the right side is no issue and I feel that it is actually a benefit for me since it makes running the gun faster.

no PG on it, don't feel that its needed.

edit: oh, the Beretta does come with a pretty short buttstock (not quite junior size) that might be short enough for her.

and a gas-operated semi is usually gonna recoil less than a pump so that might be something to keep in mind.

Get a 20 guage pump junior size with rifle stock. Perhaps you can find a lefty if she requires. Since you say she is not an avid shooter, this is a slightly softer route and may help her to remember a proper cheek weld in an emergency.

Can always move up after training to 12g.

Get a youth model shotgun that will fit proper first.
Most lefty's don't have a problem shooting a right handed shotgun..................at least not in the 60+ years I've been at it!

I'm a lefty and never been hit in the face by brass or shells from ARs, 870s, etc. She'll be fine.

However, if you are that concerned, look into an Ithaca 37. Buy an old 12 gauge and hacksaw the barrel to min legal length (measure more than once lol).

I have a surplus 870 Police Magnum I just picked up for $200 with side saddle. Deals are out there. With low recoil buck and slugs, the 3 female shooters (one of which is 5ft tall) who have shot it found it more than manageable. But they all wished the stock was shorter. So keep in mind you may need to get an Urbino stock or Hogue short LOP stock.

What about the Mossberg 500 series? The safety is mounted in an ambidextrous position. The ejection port is, however still gong to be on the right side of the weapon.

I'm right handed but left eye dominant, regular, right handed weapons work fine for me

I would suggest the browning BPS.

It is a bottom eject gun, and your wife not being an Avid shooter, will allow you to shoot it or sell it easier than a left hand only gun.

My buddy shoots one of these in 20ga for ducks, and it is a nice little gun.

Or since it is for HD use odds are it will never be used, so just buy a right handed tacticool one.

I'm a lefty and do just fine with a rh gun. My suggestion would be a mossberg 500 combo or Remington 870 combo with the 18" and 28" barrels in 20 gauge. Get her some range time shooting trap so she is used to the gun. Slap on the shorter barrel for HD and leave it with safety off and empty chamber.

I think it's important to pick a gun that she will have an excuse to shoot such as trap or skeet. There is no way my wife would stand there and practice with a 12 gauge for HD but make it competitive and she will shoot three rounds of trap trying to beat me.

Good call on the Browning Bps,I believe they are neutral cast as well
