ex-Sacramento PD 870 reborn (lots of pics)

Earlier this year, I picked up an ex-Sacramento Police Department 870 Wingmaster. Very solid, great action, shot POA and patterend well. But, the finish as expected was rough. Very rough. Some signs or rust.

I'm fickle and vain when it comes to my toys. I like them clean and I like it when I am the one to put wear on them. Except for family heirlooms and some military surplus guns, I want them dings, scratches, and dents to be of my making.

I sent the 870 out to Mac's Shootin Irons in Tucson, AZ for Gun Kote over parkerizing. The results were fantastic. I added a Hogue 12" LOP stock, a 1 shot extension, a tritium front sight, side saddle, and have a picatinny rail enroute for the forearm so I can mount a light.

Between Speer LEO 8 pellet ammo and Hornady TAP, I'm getting good tight patterns. I think I've created a solid HD shotgun.

Tritium night sight shows up very clear in natural light as well

Looks sweet! I'm still waiting for my 870P to arrive at my dealer, so I was in need of some shotgun porn. Thanks for posting.

wow, that is nice. Mind if I ask the total $$ for the gunkote job (including shipping).

The refinish was $125 including return postage. It's actualy gunkote sprayed over parkerizing. He strips and parkerizes the weapon first before he sprays on the gun kote.

The aluminium trigger guard came out nice too.

I tore down the shotgun first and removed the wood, carrier, and bolt before shipping. If you send the complete gun and want everything coated, it will set you back $190.

Fed Ex lets you ship long guns via Fed Ex Express. Cost me $11.50 postage. If my new math works, that means the whole thing cost me $136.50.

I got it back in 10 days.

How did you know that Mac's was the place to go to - there are several shops out there that offer refinishing, so I'm just curious how you ended up picking Mac's. Not saying that his work is bad - it looks great! But there are so many from which to choose?

I can't speak for GnR, but I've always seen rave reviews and lots of recommendations for Mac's any time the subject of "spray 'n bake" finishes is brought up.

I went there based on strong recommenations. After talking with them via phone and email, I was confident enough to send them my 1911 in January. I liked that enough that I never hesitated to send them my 870 last month.
