    410 for Skeet and clays??

Does anybody use a 410 gauge for Sporting Clays or skeet? I am thinking about trying this out, I hear it is a challenge.

You better be a great shotgunner. It will be humbling.

My buddy does. He's a Master Class shooter in sporting clays (or top class).

      It's a challenge.

What people don't understand is that they think they need to shoot some specific way... what they should be doing is shooting the same as any other gauge.. don't change leads or anything.. and don't let the idea get into your head.. just go out and shoot.

While we primarily shoot skeet with a larger gauge, there's about 8 to 10 of us in my club that do shoot skeet with a .410.
Everyone that we've shared our guns with (to give them a try) has enjoyed shooting a .410.

Due to the cost of .410 ammo, most of us reload.

Quite a few guys shoot a 28 gauge. One of the top 2 skeet shooters in the club says he enjoys shooting his 28 gauge the most and feels he shoots it the best (he shoots all 4 gauges).

I don't think I'd shoot sporting clays with a .410 and haven't heard anyone mention that they did.

I have come to really like my 28 gauges. I've been toying with the idea of getting a 32 gauge just for sheets and giggles.

I say give it a go especially if you already have a 410. I dont shoot clays or skeet but often use a single shot 410 for quail hunting, fun to change things up once in a while and you might find it makes you hit better when you go back to 12 gauge.

There used to be an old guy at Triple B who shot trap for money with his .410 against the 12ga trap guys. He allegedly won a lot of money. He may still be there.

Great gauge for skeet; skeet sets always include a .410 barrel or tube and most competitions have a .410 round. Never tried it on sporting clays.

If you reload, the cost is not too bad, mainly the cost is the hulls. We used to reload the hulls till they split or blew out the bottom wad.

Absolutely right. One of my favorite skeet range guns is a old model 42 in skeet choke. The pellets are going the same speed as a 12 gauge so it gets the same lead. A good center hit with a .410 will smoke a skeet target almost like a 12 gauge, the big difference is less pellets on the fringe of the pattern to make up for a bad shot.

End of discussion. If ammo was cheap, I'd be up for the challenge. I can get 100 rounds of Federal 12ga universal loads for 22$. Hard to beat.

True. Shots from all stations are 22 yards at the midpoint between Stations 1 and 8. Same velocity, same energy, smaller pattern.

I was occasionally able to run the field with my full choked Model 42, but nearly always over over 20. I really didn't do much better on average with a dedicated small-frame 410 870 Wingmaster skeet gun. When you're on 'em, you're on 'em.

For years I would give my hulls to one of the regulars who had the whole Ponsness Warren setup and he would reload them for me for $3/box.
