question about mini shells and recoil

I have an older friend that wants to shoot his 12 gauge mossberg pump. He shot it once and could not handle the recoil. I was wondering if the mini shells would work in his gun and have less recoil? Are they a good idea?
I know I can buy low recoil ammo, but I am looking for more tips.
I will let him use my PAST shoulder pad.
He bought some kind of stock from turners that is supposed to have something to reduce recoil. I don't know if it will help or not.

If he's that old and that green maybe it's not the time for new tricks. It's only a 250$ gun. Sell and see if he can't handle a 20g or .410 if he really needs a shotgun.

Choice in shotshells can make a big difference. Lot at buying some low recoil loads.

I suggest he sell the pump and purchase a semi-auto. Pumps kick quite a bit more than gas operated semi-autos. He also might consider a 20 ga semi-auto instead of a 12 ga. With a nice aftermarket recoil pad and low recoil shells, he should be good to go.

A 12ga pump to a 20ga semi auto will feel like going from a 9mm handgun to a .22lr. Like butta.

However, I agree that a stock pad and low powered shells help. But they probably pale in comparison to some training so he fires the 12ga properly. Bad form probably causes 75% of the complaints.

Different ammo companies make light loads in 12 gauge.

If you want a light shooting 12 gauge, find a Brownian A500 with recoiling barrel.

A Browning A-5 with the recoiling barrel (or a copy like a Remington Model 11, or a Remington 11-48, or similar actions) is not as tame as a gas-operated auto like a Remington 1100 or 58 Sportsman, or even an 11-87 because one is dealing with the mass of the barrel coming back upon recoil.

Shot skeet and trap with all of those in high-school in '69-'70 (except for the 11-87) and I still like my old 870 Wingmaster IC choke with a thick ventilated recoil pad for skeet. Slick. Just as fast as an 1100 in good hands and better manual control. Also shot a buddy's 20 gauge Model 12 with a Cutts Comp at skeet. Light and very loud, but hardly any recoil from a 6 lb gun.

Like a .22? Never experienced that.

I worked at a trap/skeet range (Roberts' Shooting Park, Elkhorn NE: it hasn't existed for many years as it is now the site of a community college) for two years back in the day and was able to scrounge many once-fired empty hulls in empty Blue Rock boxes free of charge (management ALWAYS wanted the once-fired Win AA hulls for resale @2 cents apiece, so they were off-limits to me). I always reloaded once-fired Federal paper hulls (same low-base internal height as the AA's) and the once-fired Remington Shur-Shot plastic green hulls (high-base internal height). Back then I used Pacific one-piece shot wad/collars which were made in two heights: short for the Rems (green) and tall (red) for the Wins/Federals.

My Dad had a Win Model 12 he always wished that it had one more shot than the standard capacity. I came up with the idea to load cut-down Federal paper hulls with the shorter Rem wads, still using the standard trap/skeet load that I used of 18 grains of Red Dot under 1-1/8 oz. of shot. Chuckle: we were using a huge Herter's single-stage press and it took a bit of time to turn them out, but when you are a kid, you have a lot of time. Dad was always able to load one more round with those shells and we never had a problem with the Model 12 or the 870 feeding issues.

If one reloads, you can vary the loads to basically what you prefer.

Just my $.02 worth.

Those trap/skeet loads are pretty light and anyone who shoots a shotgun properly will not have any recoil issues (like using the "chicken-wing" outward elbow/arm position to properly position the butt of the gun in the armpit and a proper cheek-to-stock weld). Killed many pheasant and quail (and Blue Rocks) with those loads.

Even for 64-year-old farts like me.

Yeah, thru my Browning 525 they have "negative" recoil

Not in a Mossberg. Had luck with my Rem 870 & Win 1200 but not a 100%.

So I guess my question is "Will they work in a pump"????

I hear they work best in the KSG and the Win Defender. Everything else requires modification to function properly.
