    Browning BPS Problems

    Hello all,

So I have an older 12 gauge Browning BPS shotgun that is constantly jamming. The gun loads and fires perfectly, but when you go to rack the slide it will not pump. The slide lock release works under normal circumstances, but does not help in this situation and the only way I have found to clear the jam is to remove the barrel. Once cleared, it will reload and fire again but will jam right back up. I initially thought it was because the action was dirty, So i gave it a thorough cleaning but that only worked for 2 or 3 rounds before jamming again. I've tried several different brands and loads of ammo so I've ruled that out. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be are much appreciated, or if anyone can recommend a good gunsmith in the Yuba-Sutter or Sacramento area that would be helpful as well.

    Thanks!

    ><

From your post...sounds like your chamber may be the issue....dirt, rust ?? Give it a good scrubbing with a brass brush and clean the chamber rim also.....run your finger in there and see if you feel anything that is not smooth

Does it cycle when dry fired? (please make sure your gun and mag are empty before you dry fire) .....if yes, then I would put more weight on the chamber being the issue

I second this. With a nice fresh clean 870, the action will start to bind when I shoot cheap Winchester ammo. The issue was with the plastic of the shell melting on to the chamber when it gets warm. I went to federal and haven't had an issue.

Thanks for the response, Yes it cycles normally when dry fired. It feels smooth to the touch, but there are a few visible scratches running parallel to the barrel in the chamber. As far as I can tell there is no visible rust or dirt in the chamber.

Try cleaning the chamber again, and then polish it with a wood dowel wrapped with steel wool as shown here: http://www.aiptactical.com/Page_2.html

Wife and I both shoot trap almost every week when I'm not traveling and I use this method to keep the chamber of our shotguns smooth like a mirror. This lets our semi-auto (Benelli M2 and Supersport) shotguns use even the cheapest/dirtiest shells without too much problems with shell ejection.

Thanks for this. I have a cheapo 870 express that I need to try this on. The extractor will grab the expired shell, but not eject it completely.
