12 ga. 1 oz #8 loads game or field loads are what I started my son on. Federal cheapies from Walmart should work just fine. You may find better deals on cases online.

It is easy to overthink shotgun games.
Whichever range you plan on shooting at should have some recommended instructors you can connect with to coach you along on your first couple of rounds anyway.

I just listed a Browning BPS trap gun. It's good to start right and go with a dedicated trap gun. This was my first trap gun. For the money, you really can't go wrong.

That's a great price, I bought one new about a year ago, had I seen that, I could have saved a few bucks, gun looks great.
