    870 extension problem

so i bought a NIB SJ hardware bayonet mount kit for my 870 a couple years back on the classifieds and just got around to installing it a couple months back. i noticed i had a problem loading all 6 rounds in the tube and after some troubleshooting i noticed the tube looked like it had some problems. SJ hardware have been a PITA to get a hold of so im looking at doing a fix myself. here are some pictures:

    the tube

follower as far in the tube as it can go

6 2 3/4 shells with the follower and the extension

it loads 5 rounds and feeds 5 rounds properly, but i'd like to get the 6th in.
anyone have any ideas? thinking i gotta find someone with a massive drill to knock out the edge halfway down the tube...

    You haven't removed the dimples?
WTB: Marlin 989 M2 stock (uncracked), and 989 M2 rifles
    Thanks

Dimples are gone. It feeds five rounds fine but because the follower can't go deeper into the tube I can't get the last round in.

Not familiar with your magazine extension brand---always have used Remington factory mag extensions on my two older 870s with zero issues---just sayin'...

Go to www.aiptactical.com and click on the red link "Install and Cleaning" and read the part on tube extensions and installing them. Not sure if this will help with your issue as I don't use that brand but any extension can have this issue if there is a gap being left inside the coupling due to improper install. Hope this helps.

I actually did use your tutorial as well as your how-to video to install and I just did it again to check to make sure it wasn't just user error. Really wish I went with someone else's extension now, but I read that S&J usually makes good stuff, so I didn't expect problems, sigh <_<. I guess what I'm really trying to figure is how deep in the tube are the follower and 5th and 6th shells suppose to go? Because as of now, with no spring in the extension, this is how far the follower and 1 shell go in:

I was sent a follower to try made by that company and found it caused issues. So, simply try another follower. Use the Remington one that came with the gun and if you can now get 6 six in your tube you know it is the follower not the extension. If that does not resolve the issue try another spring.

Process of elimination can find a problem if you follow it systematically. Wow, I have not used that many big words in years.

Funny I found this as I just ordered an s&j +2 bayonet mount for my 870 today. I'll let you know how mine works once it arrives and I get it installed.

Here's a picture of my S&J +2 with the included follower and (2) 2 3/4" shells loaded into the extension. Clearly yours is obstructed, out of round, or something. Definitely request a replacement. These are really high quality parts, but I guess mistakes happen in everything. Hope this photo helps.

Comparing these 2 pics it looks like it may have been a past problem that S&G addressed.

The pic of the current tube seems to have a chamfered throat and a slicker finish.

And +1 on trying different followers.
