Norinco Shotguns

Are the Norinco shotguns worth owning for under $200? This will mainly be a home protection gun.

How close is it to a Remington 870?

I don't know where you're going to get one for 200, Big 5 have them but they're $250 now so after tax & DROS you're looking at $300.

Pretty close to the 870 except the barrels don't interchange.

I own one -- the Interceptor 982 -- it's a Rem 870 clone, and comes with ghost sights. I got it on sale for $200 before DROS at Big 5 during the before Christmas sale.

So far, so good -- some say it's actually better than a lot of the real Remington 870 HD models, because it didn't have the doublefeed issue (Norinco made a fix in their model) and all of the parts are metal, unlike the plastic trigger guard on some 870s. You can use the Remington manual for takedown/maintenance, and pretty much everything except for the barrels (which I admit is a significant issue) are swappable between the two. Remington even imports their own clone now, under the H&R Pardner brand/model.

But some people are religious here about buying American and loving their Remingtons, so expect some debate on that topic. My 2 cents is that you should go for it, Norinco makes good guns, and the 870 type shotgun is a time tested (and no longer on patent) reliable model. Just be sure to clean out the cosmoline and other crap out of it when you get yours, and oil the crap out of it.

I would wait a couple of months. I have been told that more IAC Hawk Norinco made 982 shotguns will be imported around the end of Feb or the middle of March. The price will come down some. Expect to pay around $200 when they come in. They have become very popular. People are finding out what a deal these shotguns are.

A good shotgun for the money. Got mine for $190 OTD and it eats up all ammo with no hiccups. The GRS is a plus for using slugs and those run for at least $100 if you want to put it on a 870. Hardcore Remington fans dont like but to each their own.

I got one of the Norinco made Ithaca 37 copies. Great little shotgun. It was 129.00 at big 5 back in the days.

I have one of the Ultra 87s imported by Century Arms. It's not the same gun as the IAC 982. The Ultra 87 is made of all blued steel, and has the red "fiber optic" muzzle loader type barrel sights. Mine has needed a little work and some breaking in on the action to get it work right, although I am returning the barrel to CAI, as the rear sight is canted a little to the left. My impression is the quality can be hit or miss. On the other hand, I have picked up one Ultra 87 which had a silky smooth action. I guess it's a case of try before you buy.

Ultra 87s are made in Zhong Zhou, China. Does anyone know if the IAC 982 are marked with a place of manufacture?

My 982 only says "Made in China" on the side of the receiver.

I would wait on Big 5 to get the Interstate 982 Hawk back in stock -- it has ghost sights (worth $100 on their own), and you'll save on shipping and the FFL fee. Just $25 DROS and sales tax, plus the great sights.

For a cheap shooter I'm sure they are fine, but I would prefer a Mossy or 870 anyday for Home defense.

You would change your mind if you tried one out. You can't beat them for what they offer for the money.
