    Fortmanns left hand safety conversion

Anyone have one on their 870? I'm left eye dominant but right handed. I shoot my long guns left handed. My agency, like most, uses the 870. I'm used to shooting right handed shotguns left handed because that's what's issued and that's also what I own. Just purchased a $15 Fortmanns safety conversion and I hope it's fairly simple to install.

If you are doing this on an Agency gun then you may want to rethink this. Or even if you are doing this on a personally owned duty weapon. Two reasons.

    1. It is not safe and you will be on your own should you have and issue with the gun. Neither Remington nor your Department will stand with you. And as they tell us at the Factory LE Armorers Class " Do what we say and Remington and Remington's Hundreds of Attorneys will stand with you. Do something we don't recommend or go off on you own and those same Hundreds of Attorney's will throw your A** under the buss to protect this Company.

    2. If you are down and the first responding officer comes to your aid under fire, grabs your 870 because it is laying there and as he is fumbling with the safety because he doesn't know it is a left hand and he get hit then you have put a fellow officer in danger.

I don't recommend doing this to duty guns even if you do it correctly. The only safe correct way is to change to the Right Hand Eject/Left Hand Safety Trigger plate assembly, part #F112044. This is the only Remington approved way to convert a safety on a Remington Shotgun. This is good advice from a Factory Certified Remington LE armor and retired LE. Re think this and if you are fine shooting the right hand guns leave things alone. It's you future and you life so of course it is your decision.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

I considered this above and I'm on the fence about making it patrol gun. Pushing a safety left while holding it in the left hand is an inconvenience and steering me more and more to the 590A1 (if I could find one). I may just keep using the right handed 870s our office issues and hope I get enough range time in my 2 quals a year with the shotgun to get more comfortable with the safety. It's easy at the range with no stress to take the time and fiddle with it.

Thanks for the response and insight. I'll also look into that LH trigger plate assembly.

However I wouldn't be able to use the 590A1 at work.

Making a right-handed person fumble with a weapon that does not belong to them could put their life in danger. If you are left-handed and have not yet been killed by the weapon design Do Not Change Anything!

Why your agency won't reasonably accommodate your disability with a $150 safety is another question, as fumbling with a right-handed cross-bolt safety while under fire obviously puts your life in danger!

That said, the Fortmanns works fine, and makes using the 870 much easier and quicker. The install is simple and no number of lawyers will ever save you from acting irresponsibly with a firearm, that is only up to you. Always.

            .

I don't have a disability. I just shoot long guns left handed.

Thanks for the Fortmann's info. Probably going to swap the trigger plate for the LH one and may not use it however.
