    Slugs and smoothbore

According to the manufacturer, I am able to shoot slugs through my particular barrel with my particular IC choke. That being said, what type of slugs give the best accuracy out of a smoothbore barrel? Rifled? , I read that sabot slugs need a rifled barrel for accuracy, true or false? I suppose I can also buy a rifled barrel but that is the more expensive route.

There are some interesting youtube videos comparing types of slugs and accuracy.

1 oz Winchester slugs worked good out of my Benelli M1 Super 90 and my Remington 870. Almost any slug should work good. Brenneke slugs with something attached to the base are claimed to be better than plain slugs.

I have had terrific accuracy and reliability shooting Fiocchi 1oz and 7/8oz slugs, both high and low velocity, from the smooth bore barrel on my Benelli Supernova tactical. I'd imagine any good slug would do the same. Have not shot any sabot slugs so cannot comment on them.

        5 slugs @ 25 yards...

I have found I like the winchester rifled slugs ........ they were not more accurate than the remingtons BUT the remingtons varied greatly from lot to lot ......... where as the winchesters did not.
So as long as I had all the same lot , the rem would have been fine for me but by buying a few boxes at a time , it was not so.
of course this may be expected with any different lot numbers but I felt the remingtons were abusing that privilege.
Just something to check/keep in mind.

Federal low recoil 1oz slugs worked well out of my Benelli M1 @ 25yds.
I just swapped the 20" control bore for a 21" Field barrel to get more out of it.
I also found taking my barrel clamp off helped point of impact.
Depending on where and how tight it was on, it would change POI.

can't use sabot slugs on a straight bore

I run rifled slugs on my straight bore

Beware leading of the bore with slug shooting, that's point one if you do a lot of slug shooting you may be in for a LOT of cleaning. At least I was.

For me the "rifled" slugs were OK, prefer the wad-stabilized types from Brenneke or similar.

If you are thinking about slug hunting, be sure to check out the steel offerings from DDupleks, not that you can shoot them at any ranges, you'll need to find BLM or Forest land to check how they pattern. These also have a rear wad stabilized flight.

If you want to watch amazing gel destruction have a great time on Youtube. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRHmDaDnwDU

Sabot slugs need the rifling from the barrel to impart a spin to the projectile as it passes down the barrel. Without the rifling you might as well shoot an old smoothbore musket rifle and that would probably be more accurate. Having grown up in Ohio where the only rifles you were allowed to hunt deer with were black powder muzzleloaders, shotguns were the preferred method for hunting and successfully took in many deer. As I understand it, only recently has the state allowed rifles to be used for hunting purposes. And only those that are straight walled cartridges.
