I measured from the boltface down the barrel with the action closed. You I'm was thinking to wrap the barrel in painters tape where I am going to cut and use a hack saw. Clean up with a coarse and fine file. Any suggestions would be appreciated as this is a first for me. I'm wondering if I can relocate the bead on the new shortened barrel and what would be good to blue the metal.
I've cut a couple barrels and I have an express 870 that I did the exact same thing with.
except I wrapped the barrel with plain masking tape , marked my line and ended up with a tru glo front sight instead of rebeading.
It is the magnetic kind , granted it could come off although it hasn't and even if it should ..... within the confines of my home ...... it's not going to matter
I don't believe I had to do any clean up of the barrel to be honest but this was some years ago ... if I did have to do any , it wasn't much
Use a new hacksaw blade was the advice I always used.
I don't see you needing a course file ..... the fine one "maybe" , it would clean up easy and quickly if needed.
I'm sure I used one of the numerous blue touch up pens for the exposed metal at the cut .

I did my wingmaster barrel the same way, right down to the truglo sight.
After i bought the after market barrel with choke tubes i didn't touch the full choke , 28" orig. for about ten years.
In an HD weapon "familiar" is a good thing.

You will miss the rib. At least I would.

The advantage of having a rib is you can now buy some very reasonably priced sights that will attach to the rib for shooting slugs.

Vent rib is fast, have it dovetailed for a 10/22 rear sight + triangle truglo front.
              Rifle sights are OK.
              Ghost rings are slow.

I'm used to a 20" Benelli rifle sights no choke.
I switched to a 21" vent rib recently BC I shoot a lot of #6 and slugs past 40yds.
              Control bore wasn't cutting it.
Chokes make a difference for what I'm doing, and I'm fine with 8 shells with a flush Nordic tube.

Rear sight and a triangle up front is hard to beat for whatever occasion.
Try to price out options for rifle sights or ghosts rings for a shotgun....few options and your mounting choices without a rib are limited.

I did forget to mention , because when I cut the barrel I had no front sight ..... for the truglo to butt up against ........... it would come off sometimes , I used a small zip tie around the rib to simulate a front sight and butt the truglo up against that.
                it worked
