I need some advice

My cousin was gonna throw away a savage 696rxl series E pump shotgun that was given to him from uncle but he knows nothing about the history of the shotty .. So since im gettin into dove hunting i told him not to throw it away so he gave it to me but i dont know how to approach this situation about registering it or do i even have to register it since its sn older shotty i dont want to go to chp and ask about it and it being a hot gun .. Dont wanna open a can of worms !!

My experience with unknown pedigree is that the state and gummint is happy to see that you are trying to register a firearm. If there is anything wrong with it, theyll "likely" take your word for it, and avoid trouble. You may lose the gun, but I would not expect a legal nightmare.

Criminals do not register guns. Now only if the lawmakers knew that smh

He gave it to you long before 01/01/14 right? otherwise you have to jump through some hoops to make transfer and spend some money...
Your local gun shop can make a transfer.
