    Trap gun

I'm looking at getting a dedicated trap gun. I currently use an old Browning Citori (which I absolutely love!!!) but has a somewhat short barrel for trap.

With my love of the citori, I was thinking of getting the citori trap model, but then I was thinking why not a single barrel break action?

What do you recommend? A single barrel, or another citori o/u?

I have shot ATA trap with both a SBT and an O/U.

I had a BT-99 ( 34" ) and a XT ( 32" ) but sold the BT and shot singles, doubles & handicap all with the XT. I shot more 100 straights from 16 yds with the XT than the BT so I don't think it held me back.

The fit of the gun and the pattern are far more important than anything else. I like a gun with an adjustable butt plate and 4-way comb.

      What's your gun budget ?

Oh - and a BT-99 is not a single barrel Citori. Everything about that gun feels different.

Gun fit. Don't worry about the specifics. Are you in the 20's? What about doubles?

I personally want a BT-99 34" for no other reason but a "want." One of my friends has one and usually shoots almost perfect every time. It shoulders well for me but I do want one with an adjustable comb and butt.

As others have stated, fit is important. It is definitely worth testing it out before purchasing. Others in my trap matches love their SKB single barrel break action. Only down side is the only SKB dealer I know is in Carson City so testing it may be a physical challenge.

I was eyeballing those in the LGS today next to the citori 725 and XT

Not quite positive if I can swing the XT or 725 yet, but am willing to save for those, and the BT99 is about 1500 I believe. I definitely want one with an adjustable comb.

I'm still trying to figure out what barrel length to go with, most likely a 30 or 32

Usually shoot 22-23 per round. Never shot doubles, I just shoot recreationally but looking to get into the sport more. My current citori fits me extremely well (its stock, unmodified in any way), and "if anything at all, could use about a 1/8th inch pad on the stock" according to the instructor

Old Beretta Mark II here. It just fits me better. YMMV.
For an o/u I'd look for a Remington 3200 Trap---a great design and probably not too costly considering they haven't been made in quite while.

I have a 1990's BT99 that I shot for a long time. I felt the BT 100 when they made it and liked it more. I'm not sure what they are making today.

                    My own opinion...

Save up for an XT, or buy a used one. Having gone the route before of having a gun like a BT-99, I found that I always wanted to shoot doubles, but could not unless I dragged another gun along. The XT solves that problem.

Buy an XT with no factory adjustable hardware. The Browning adjustable hardware is mediocre and tends to loosen up at the worst times (I have one, so I know). Send your stock off to a reputable installer and they will put in trouble-free aftermarket adjustable comb and butt-plate hardware that will last a lifetime. When you get it back you will not be able to tell it was not done at the factory.

I think I'm going to go with the XT. How old is yours with the adjustable comb, I heard that they fixed those problems (?)

My XT is probably 10-ish years old. They may indeed have fixed the hardware problems since then (unless you buy an older used one).

The other thing I don't like about the factory hardware I have vs. the aftermarket, is that I have to go through the butt-plate to adjust comb-height. Screwing and unscrewing the butt-plate with a wood stock and wood screws just makes me nervous to strip out the fragile threads (yes, I know there are inserts that can be used to lessen the problem).

I in no way think this is a huge negative on the gun, the XT is an outstanding gun (and I've used it successfully for trap and sporting clays) and it could last a life time. As with most things it just has certain weaknesses.

I guess I should have been more clear...replacing the factory butt-pad as I have can make it troublesome to adjust the factory comb hardware without taking off the butt-pad.
