    Versa Max Barrel Coatings

I have a Versa Max tactical that I bought an extra barrel for (Link https://www.remington.com/shop/Versa...8%22/p/F407763) to satisfy a new rule at the trap range requiring 26 in + barrels.

Received it today from Remington and immediately noticed a difference in finishes. The original barrel has a very smooth hand and light glossy black finish. The new barrel feels like fine grit sandpaper and has a dark grey finish. Pretty sure the new barrel would scuff up a clear drinking glass and the original wouldn't, seeming more like it has a baked-on finish.

Literature with Remington is sparse. What IS the difference?

I think some "tactical" Versamax barrels get the black "Tri-nyte" diamond-like coating, while the one you got kinda looks like regular Parkerizing.

Pretty sure I read in the VersaMax manual that the original barrel is melonited (lots of other names for it QPQ, nitrided, etc) gives it the glossy nearly rust-proof super high rockwell surface hardness.

As to the other barrel, no idea. I had looked into the VersaMax rifled slug barrel but at $350 and no reviews anywhere on the net that I can find... I wasn't going to be the first giny pig

Sounds about right, this would explain the $100 difference between the "Sportsman" barrels and the plain Versa Max Barrel.
