Suggestions for a HD Semi-Auto Shotgun

The shotgun that I employ for HD is an ancient, run of the mill Remington 870. The only modification I've done to it is to swap out the barrel with a shorter one.

I'm in the market for a semi auto in a tactical configuration. Something that is reliable, but not crazy expensive.

To be honest, there's nothing wrong with an 870. I actually went from using a Benelli M4 to an old 870. For me and my needs its perfectly fine. It is not finicky with ammo and will always run (Not that the Benelli M4 was finicky or unreliable, but I was able to get and outfit 2 870's with Vangcomp barrels, Scattergun Technologies Sights, Surefire forend light and upgrade the trigger groups to Police trigger groups for the price of 1 Benelli m4).

However, if you have your heart set on a Semi, try looking into older m1 and m2 Benelli's on the used market. I can't say the Mossberg 930 is good to go, as I have seen a number of friends run into issues with theirs and they are still trying to sort out what is a reliable load for them. Same goes for any of the Saiga 12 shotguns. I know some will say looking to into Remington 1100 series of shotguns, however I don't have any experience with them. Other than a Benelli M4, the most reliable semi that I have shot and have experience with is a Browning A4.

If it's good enough for Jerry M., I'm sure it will work fine.

If you really want a pistol grip, they make a Turkey hunting model with a pistol grip, and you can always get a magazine extension to get 9/10 rounds. Or, you could get the JM Pro model, and get a different stock. But remember, you can't have a collapsible stock on a semi-auto in CA. Let alone this revolving magazine that Jerry has in this video. lol

I'm very comfortable with my 870, but yeah, I want a semi-auto. Benelli has been brought up a couple of times. I'll have a look into what else is available in their inventory.

Or, there is the SPX special purpose, and they run around $900 but have ghost ring sights. Might be the way to go, if you can find one.

My JM Pro 24 has seen nearly 2000 rounds of mostly Field loads shooting Clays but also a fair amount of Buckshot and Slugs and I have experienced maybe five malfunctions. Got it at Big 5 when they were doing their 20% off one Firearm promo and I paid less than $700 OTD. Some consider a 24" barrel a bit long for HD but I really don't think the additional 5.5" of length is an issue.

I would say Benelli M4 all the way but they are a bit over $1K. I have seen used M1s and M2s in stores in the $850-900 range. I have never fired either gun but I have heard that they are fine shotguns.

No FHE(though I wish I did), I have read mixed reviews. FWIW, the JM Pro has been set up to Jerry M. standards and has a few niceties that make it a better choice, and more reliable. You could have ghost ring sights added to a JM Pro.

From what I have read, the 930 can stand to have it's internals smoothed out before use, and then lubed. Or, you can just shoot it a lot until it breaks in. I believe the JM Pro has been gone over already from the factory, but that could just be rumor.
