    Choke selection

Hey what's the best choke for my Benelli Nova 12 gauge for duck hunting over decoys? I'm blowing holes in the birds, hitting them with 20+ bb's. I need to change or continue to decimate the birds.

I've hunted squirrels, bandtailed pigeons ,grouse, mtn quail,,valley quail & gambels quail with my Rem 870 Wingmaster using my 30 inch full choke trap barrel with 1 1/8 oz of 6's & 7 1/2's using 35.3 gr of Win 540 (HS 6)in a Win 2 3/4 inch AA shell @ 1425fps.I don't get within 10 feet & pull the trigger or I'd have a shredded squirrel or bird. One of the new hunters in our group used his future fil's win mod 12 with 1 1/4 oz of 5's powered by 35grains of win 540 on a squirrel about 10 feet from the muzzle when he went to pick it up it was shredded & 36 inches long

Are these factory loads or reloads & what shot size are you using?

What size choke are you using now? Start by going one bigger.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I use Improved Cylinder. If you are shooting what came in the gun, it is likely set up with full choke. My BPS came that way. Steel shot = open choke. Lead shot = more constricted.

If your shooting over decoys, you will enjoy some addtional benefit by using
            Full choke.

I'm shooting over decoys, with what came in the gun. Probably a full choke. I think I'll try sarge's suggestion of the improved cylinder. Thanks for the tips.

If your blowing holes in the Ducks. 1.Move the deeks farther out. 2.Or use a modified choke.

If you are close enough to put that many pellets in the bird, then I would use improved or one of the skeet chokes. Too tight a choke at closer ranges also leads to more misses and more cripples.

+1 to Bowfin. Dad hunted ducks 5 days a week for 15 years and he ALWAYS used an Improved Cylinder choke for ducks and geese. Improved Cylinder = Modified for steel. Steel doesn't like being constricted since there is some "bouncing around" in the shell during it's trip down the barrel. If you want improved range, get a higher velocity shell and a larger pellets.
