    Adding an unsingle barrel?

    I have a 686 Onyx with 30" O/U barrels.

What would it take to make a unsingle barrel to fit it?

A uni barrel, and a trip to a competent gun smith.

I was told that I need a 682 Gold E barrel. If anyone has one, I am in the market.

While I have a 682 over-single barrel, I also have a 682 that it fits (not for sale).

I wanted to shoot some trap, so I went to the Joel Etchens site and found one. Talked with the gunsmith there and he said that many times it's a straight fit with the way the newer shotguns are made. So I took me chances and got away without a fitting needed, it slide right in place with the forestock fitting just right as well, that's the part that I thought would need fitting.

They make both styles, over-single and under-single. The under has a hugely high rib to compensate for the low ride in the frame, the over has a milder rib. I opted for the over barrel in 34".

Since the 686 has the same frame as the 682, you may experience the same luck, there's no telling.

You can buy a new one for ~$1600 at Etchens. The current ones have an adjustable rib and Optima Plus chokes. That would be consistent with Gold E, but any era will work.

          My understanding
is new ones almost always need to be fitted (forend iron and ejector timing). Previously fitted ones have 50/50 chance of working on your receiver. Fitting runs about $150.

            JagerDog --

I did fail to mention that the one I bought was a used barrel. Fits fine.

Sorry for the lack of exact history.
