So I want to give a good friend of mine a gun as a wedding present. I'll be sure to handle all the legalies before handing it off. He's definately pro gun but does not own anything currently. I'm leaning towards a shotgun that can be used for home defense/trap. My budget is $200 - $400 unless there's some spectacular deal in the area. Big 5 is advertising their Mossberg 18.5/28 in pump combo deal right now for ($239). Anyone else know of any other good deals in the Bay Area? I'd like to take care of it over the weekend.

I would try Turners. Big 5 and Turners have the best prices in So Cal. Unless you buy it used but than that would make you appear to be a cheap bastard.A guy told me one time "don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat from around the corner"

Thats a great SG for the price, especially with the extra bbl, and its really light weight as well.. but limited capacity.
Personally, i really favor the 870, and there is a $30 factory incentive on now...
plus then he can play with it more over time...

Not a single regret!Comment

Yeah Big 5 has the 870 with a 28 in barrel at $239....I think he'd like the shorter barrel, but to shoot trap at the places I go it has to be longer which I why I was leaning towards the combo.Comment

id say +1 for the 870.Comment

+1 on the 870. Isn't it on sale at Turners for $270-$280?
A note on this subject. Shotgun marraige, isn't it when the bride's dad escorts the groom to the altar with a shotgun because his daughter is.........

Just to muddy the water I say a Mossy combo is perfect as a gift(complying with all existing unreasonable laws of course), two barrels, even if the choke is fixed, will be a versatile gift for anyone who isn't a shotgun snob. I'm just sick of all the people at the range trying to tell me how much the 870 is better than my 500 right after I put 3 inch slugs into a 2 inch group at 25 yards with the 18 inch barrel.Originally posted by cvigueThis is not rocket surgery.Comment

I'd spend a few bucks more and get the 870. That is a gun that will last for 150 years."Calling an illegal alien a "undocumented worker" is like calling the drug dealer hanging around outside your kid's school an "unlicensed pharmacist."Comment

Yeah, a wedding gift is for the couple, ha ha ha ha ha, as if the man would have registered for 1/5th of the stuff that is one thereOriginally posted by jessegpresleyA 500 with the two barrels will be of much more use to him. It's a nice present (you might have to get his wife something too, though).
The on sale at Big 5 Mossberg combo w/ two barrels is the best value/versatility.If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

I predict shotguns will be named "assault weapons" and confiascated with no registration period following the public out cry of the shooting death of a pheasant in the hills of Chico in 2083, rendering the 150 year life span useless.Originally posted by cvigueThis is not rocket surgery.Comment

My (now) father in law escorted my bride down the isle with her on one arm and a Marlin '98 shot gun craddled in the other arm (no she wasn't preggers). We never did get an answer who it was for her or me. Great picture in the wedding album though, you can imagine the looks when friends get to that page.Originally posted by WokMaster1+1 on the 870. Pokey
Chivalry is not dead! Its just that now when a man puts his coat down for a woman, its to keep her from getting her back wet.
