aim or point a shotgun

So I was told that you don't aim a shotgun? what is that about?

When I was at the range, I used a cheek weld, and looked down the barrel to the little bead sight, is that aiming or pointing? I had my left eye closed.

I did use a weaver stance if that matters....

Start by aiming with the front bead (your eye is the rear sight). Shoot enough and it will become second nature and you just might find that you no longer notice or need the bead.

what if you have a ghost ring sight as on a benelli m-series? treat the front sight like a bead?

What is different with the 2?

my short barrel has 1 bead on the front, and my long barrel has one bead midway on the vent rib, and another on the front end.... I should be lining up the top and the bead or beads right?

I just don't seem to understand what the difference is between aiming it and pointing it?

Don't look at the front sight except to make sure your cheek is on the stock.

Only time I line up my front sight and my target is when I shoot turkeys. For every flying bird, I keep my cheek on the stock, watch the bird, give some lead, pull the trigger and continue swinging through.

For defensive purposes, look at target, cheek on stock and pull the trigger.

Take the bead off, and look at the target with both eyes open.

When you play baseball, do you look at the bat or the ball? With 1 eye or 2?

When you play golf, do you look at the club head or the ball? With 1 eye or 2?

When you play tennis, do you look at the racket or the ball? With 1 eye or 2?

When you merge onto the freeway, do you look at the hood of your car or where you want to go ? 1 eye or 2?

Are you starting to see a pattern here?

Look at your target and your brain will do the rest. Yes, I know, it’s not for everybody, but give it a try for a few months.

Now onto something else. After you hit the ball with the (bat, club, racket) do you stop dead in your tracks, or do you follow thru?

Same thing in sporting clays, if you stop the gun, you probably shot behind the target.

Oh, I'm right handed and right eye dominant. Since we all have two eyes and they're next to each other you're going to see two images of the barrel. It's called parallax.

You aim a shotgun. Also, I've seen 12 year old girls shoot 200 rounds of 12g at a match so, you just didn't shoulder it properly and, you already discovered that. However, if you really want to shoot it the best (and most comfortably too), you should make sure it fits you properly and get it fitted to you if it doesn't.

Wingshooting = point: The bead is to help indicate when your barrel is aligned with your eye(s). Then it has no purpose as you should be focusing on the target. The barrel is out of focus at that point. It should be like a mirage.

Slug, turkey, etc. = aim similar to rifle.

this is mainly a range gun. although I might go take it to somewhere where I can shoot discs one day... not really a hunter.... I got this for HD, and being indoor ranges around here, paper people is what I will pretty much practice with, and rifled slugs. I do usually keep the 18.5" barrel on it, not sure on it's choke, it isn't threaded, and just says cylinder bore..... on my 28" barrel for it, it says fixed mod choke

For your purposes

At the range...you should be able to look at the center of the target, bring the shotgun to your face and pull the trigger. That is what shooters call pointing a shotgun. This can be done at 1-50 yards.

If you can point your finger accurately at a target , then you should be able to point your shotgun accurately . Pointing is pointing, finger or shotgun.

with my left eye closed, and my cheek on the stock, this is about where I hit consistently, I did notice I hit lower than where I thought it should have been (or maybe it was the otehr way around, I forget now) this was me, lining up my eye down the barrel to the bead sight on the 18.5 at 10-15 yards I think it was.
