    Single Shot Break Action Shotguns

Anyone still toy around with single shot break action shotguns like a NEF/H&R?
    (Not my shotguns)

Lately I've been taking it slow with shooting. I have gone back to basics using iron sights on my AR and currently waiting for my Ruger 10/22 to get out of jail (making it a LTR). When I first started shooting, I didn't really care for single shot shotguns but having tried one out a few months ago (20 gauge NEF), it's a blast to shoot. Mentally knowing that you have one shell forces me to concentrate and really focus on making that shot count.

They are dirt cheap and I probably will end up getting one down the road. What are your thoughts on these little buggers???

Trap shooters uses single shot type shotguns quite often. The Browning BT-99 or a Unsingle barrel from a normally double barrel shotgun.

I inherited an 1980 h&r 12 gauge that was in brand new condition. I think they are neat shotguns. I hated shooting mine though, until I bought a good recoil pad. I don't really think they serve much of a purpose, so I probably wouldn't pay more than $100 for one.

I have an H&R Tamer shotgun in 20 Gauge. Replaced the stock and forend with conventional ones. Its a kick to shoot. I mean it really KICKS! Its lightweight with 20 inch barrel.

          I had one as a kid. .410.

I loved shooting it, and taking it slow made my ammo last. Since I bought my own ammo as a kid that meant a lot.

I will be getting a single shot 308 or 30-06 this year for hunting. These show up here occasionally.

            I love my handi rifle.

            -I keep a 12 and 20 ga.
-I don't 'give a darn' about them so they can roll around the back of an ATV.
-They can flop inside a backpack taken down. You can shoot them with the barrel locked on in a pinch, so it's FAST from take down to firing if in need.
-The weight is <6 pounds. (20 weighs a touch more for the scope)
-the 12 has a 3.5" chamber and is brutal, but I know it's strong for any shot. 2.75's are soft shooting.
-compatible with rem chokes (mine anyways)
-the 20 is rifled and shoots rem lead-free ammo GREAT.

I put an $80 bushnell shotgun scope on the 20 and I am very impressed with it for 50-100 yard shooting.

For awhile, I wanted to play with rifle barrels, they *were* cheap and plentiful at the time, so I had a 357 maximum (shooting 250 grain bullets at 1700 fps from a 16" barrel gun), an inline muzzleloader, etc. BTW 16" barrel guns are REALLY short when there is no action to make the gun longer. people at a LGS thought it was not legal (or legal as a pistol). Looks that short.

-They have 5 moving parts inside so it's easy to work on, including trigger job.
-Safety is "don't pull the hammer back till it's go-time" and has a transfer bar, so you can drop it loaded and it's safe.

            ---------

Do THAT with your $2000(0) trap gun

Took my old H&R 20 gauge out for turkey hunting just last week! It was my first gun, had it since I was 12 years old, and have killed hundreds of birds with it. Good stuff. I started looking for a 12g version, and am thinking about picking up one with screw in chokes.

What's the going rate for a used one these days? Aren't they usually less than $100 OTD?

I'm looking for an h&r rifled slug gun if anyone has one collecting dust. Been trying to find one for a while.

It's a nifty lil American made pantry gun. Grandma kept one behind the door for burglars and bankers.

H&R Topper in 12ga was my first shotgun. I think I paid $39 for it. It kicked like a mule.

Seems like you can get a used one on GB for ~ $100, of course getting it into your hands might double that. Your best bet would probably be the nearest pawn shop, there's gotta be at least one single-shot shotgun in each shop, it's like a rule or something.

Around twelve years ago I got a 12 ga. version from a seller on Auction Arms (now GunAuction) for $35. It looked almost new, just had a couple rub marks on the barrel. That was from my all-time favorite seller, a pawn shop in Las Vegas that later pulled out of the online auction business. They sold tons of guns cheap, you can imagine a pawn shop in Vegas gets 'em cheap!

I was thinking I wanted to do something off-beat with it, and after I saw Serenity I decided to make it an homage to Zoe:
