New CZ Huglu or Older SKB OU?

Lately I been shooting more sporting clays with friends. And though pumps and semi are pretty awesome. The cycling of the action is quite inconvenient with followup shots. Over under seems to be the logical upgrade. So like many others. I am on a perennial hunt to find that quality OU that is affordable.

At first, I had my mind set on getting a new CZ Canvasback but after some searching about. For around the same price point. I found that many legendary guns like the older SKB models could be had for the same $.

Many on the forum highly recommend the Miroku made Browning Citori line but I simply can't find a used one that sells for cheap. Its hard to justify the spending on buying one new. Another old inexpensive favorite. Spanish made Lanber on CDNN is long gone.

The pros I see is that canvasback has a pretty proven record on shotgunworld with reports of 32K+ rds shot and free of issues. Since its sold through CZ. Getting parts for maintenance should be good as well. Cons are its a Turkish gun which means it doesnt hold any value.

Old SKB is said to be legendary for build quality and reliability. The Con of course would be since the company folded some 7 years ago. Getting parts for them will become increasingly difficult. It does hold value better however.

What's your take? Do you know of any quality hidden OU gem sub 1K?

I had trigger problems(trigger pull way to high)on my CZ mallard. Called CZ, they paid shipping both ways, had the gun back in less than 2 weeks.
Great customer service. I'd consider buying from them just for the quality of their service. Also the shotgun is really nice, no problems.

i sorta went through what you are doing. I wanted a canvasback but LGS couldn't get them, I could have got one from grabagun. Ended up with the new Drake that's suppose to replace the Cback lineup.

Just got it out of lock up yesterday, will have some range time on it tomorrow and hopefully the weekend as well. $662 OTD, 5yr warranty and pretty high ratio of good reviews from other CZ shotgun users. Also would be about what a new B gun would depreciate in 5-6yrs. If I get hooked, I can get a B gun later when i can afford it and use the CZ as a loner.

jsigone. I see you are in San Diego are you shooting clays anywhere local?
I'm thinking of SBRC for trap. They are open the 2nd & 4th Wednesday.

I'm a newb to clays, my dad wants to start so good reason to get a new purpose gun. Plan to shoot at p2k and escondido F&G. Some of my LA friends have recommendations up there as well, in Chino area and Redlands.

Thanks all. The track record really boosts my confidence in the reliability department.

As for the drake. I heard its a completely new action vs the ones on redhead and canvasback. Also, it seems the barrel is connected only at the muzzle and no side rib is present. How do you like it so far?

I would suggest you stop by Fowler's Gun Room in Orange.

They have some new, old stock SKB's last time I called. I had a Weatherby Orion that was made by SKB and it was a great older trap gun. I'm sorry I let that one go.

I got to put 75 shots through it last night, just indoor guys night out thing. I hope to get it outdoor within the week though. Good for functional test and see what the others (non shotgunner) people think about it.

Shooting impressions were nice, trigger is crisp and good reset for the 2nd shot. Fit seems good. The recoil pad is small but kinda soft. I may swap it out later but didn't seem to bother me or my dad. He was thinking he would have to get a 20ga, but now thinking the 12 will work for him as well. He didn't get bruises so that is a good sign. Just shooting cheap WWB 1 1/8oz #8 and some super speed 1oz #71/2 that had a bit more thump. I was only reading the oz weight not velocity on the box ...opps

I'll get to know the gun some more in the next few months and make adjustments if needed from there, but I'm happy with the purchase so far

I had a decent thread regarding O/U just a few weeks ago, and the general consensus was to stick with the Browning Citori that I'm after.

A Citori lasts for many years; haven't heard much about CZ O/U's but would be interested in their track record.
Will probably still try and save up for the Citori, but would definitely consider the CZ series.

                        Old guns

What forum handles info on antique or older guns? I'm trying to get estimated pricing for a few guns. I have serial numbers for the guns, which should help.

I currently shoot a 22 year old Browning GTI Ultra, it has been rock solid and people are amazed how tight it is at its age. I owned a CZ (not the model in question here) before I bought the Browning, I have nothing bad to say about the CZ. It functioned perfectly in the 2 years I owned it. It didn't fit me to well, so I sold it to a friend who still shoots it...It's still going strong. BTW, when I bought the Browning, it cost me almost twice as much as the new CZ, and it was 20 years old at the time.

Shotgunworld.com has a gun values forum, you might look there...

I have cz mallard too. The trigger is over 8 lbs (out of range from my cheap wheeler trigger gauge). Is it normal?
