    KelTec KSG reliability...?

I've recently been considering adding a Keltec KSG to the collection

I've watched just about every youtube video out there and have read quite a few articles on this gun and still am unsure on whether I want it or not. If I'm going to buy a gun, I need it to be reliable.

I've seen a few people have some problems with feeding it cheap 2&3/4" ammo, but I am unsure if this is a problem Keltec has fixed with its later generations of this gun

    1. Does anyone know how many generations of this gun are out there (and how I could tell the difference if I were to go buy one)?

    2. Do you (or anyone you know) have any real world data on this gun for reliability? (took it to war, ran it through multiple shotgun classes, did a torture test, etc.)

Pump shotguns are pretty basic machines and shouldn't have too many reliability issues, but I understand that this is a totally different design and made by Keltec.

WHAT I'M GETTING AT IS: If you HAD to use a shotgun, would you take this to war with you? I just haven't been able to see any GOOD torture/durability tests....I want to see one that has been dropped, beaten, shot 10k times, never cleaned and still working, ya know? THEN i'll feel a little bit more comfortable dropping that much coin

If I can't rely on this like I would a 500/870, then I may not bother. I understand that finding a shotgun with the reliability/durability of a 500/870 might be hard to do, but it should be close if its a gun I'm going to rely on..

ALSO*** yes, I am aware of the people that have shot their front hand off. I am aware of these potential dangers.

    thanks

I changed the followers and added and extended selector. It's been 100% reliable. My Mossberg sits in the safe crying now. It's my go to war shotgun. There is a learning curve just like any new platform, but it is compact, tough, reliable and easy to shoot. Get it

Put a forward vertical grip or angle grip on it = no more hand worries

Buy one. They are friggen awesome. I fell in love with mine the first time I shot it and I was leary as well. yes, I would take this gun with me no doubt. Small, light, 10-20 rounds in tubes (if use mini shot shells).

I have now put several 1000's of rounds down range of various sizes and types (buck, bird, slug, mini shot shells, etc.) and brands (winchester, walmart cheap, aguila, federal, etc) and had zero issues. I have vids of 100 yard shots on 10x10 steel plates ping, ping, ping.

3 gens now. Skip a gen 1 for sure. I am a long term member over on the KT forums and hang around in the KSG section. I have read it all, yes, some have had serious issues. I am not one. it's a percentages thing in my mind.

Most of the people around CG that hate on them, don't own or never shot, they just chime in based on looks.

Mine is pretty modified: seen here

Cool gun. I don't think it's worth the hype/cost. Buddy has one, I shot 15 rounds out of it and said "eh that's cool, I'm done". I've never shot it again despite him constantly offering.

The cost? You can get current gen in the $750-850 range. How is that costly? The days of $1000-1500 early on when they first came out are looooong gone.

And, there are several guys selling them here now - jump on one OP.

i think i was slowly talking myself out of it, but these posts help a lot

it sounds like the quality and reliability on Keltec is overall very good but they can occasionally make one that has some problems and i'll have to be okay with taking that risk...I'm not sure that i want to yet

this is why i love the glocks, m&p, 500, 870, etc., because i feel like the chance of getting one that has problems is extremelyyyyyy low...i feel like the chance of getting a KSG that had problems is low, but much more likely than the others mentioned

i'll update if i decide to get one....i already got some mods picked out

Current 870s are terrible. Give me a KSG over a current 870 any day

I had a bunch of shotguns only have a pair of Gen 2 KSGs now. Great guns if you work the action hard.

                    Gen 1 KSGs were terrible

I've put my KSG through a 6-7 hour day of 3 gun training nd run & gun. And I've had days of 400+ rounds. But I guess that's not 'extreme' enough testing to prove it's value?

                      Zero issues.

Yes, keltec can be hit or miss, but in my case, I hit

I like how it looks, but when its time to get one i see something else of more value to me.

and i predict that the next time i walk in the store to look at a KSG again i'll change my mind and say a ruger precision rifle would be more of a value and use.

How many KSG fans in this thread have taken their shotgun through a 2 day class?
I took one of mine through a class. Worked fine. I do agree KelTec in general is hit or miss. Recent Gen KSGs I have shot seem fine

I put my Mossberg into a silicon sock and stored it and switched over entirely to my KSG. I pretty much buy Aguila minishot shells for it whenever I can find them. I bought out an online retailers entire stock 10 days ago. 120 rounds. I'd have bought more had they had them

100% reliable. Sure, 6 years ago a few had timing issues but those problems are gone I assume you're on KTOG......

                              What i like is:

                              1. 14 rounds of whatever you decide. Enough to handle any problem In survival hunting or defensive mode.

                              2. The Bull pup is very nice to carry or store in a small pack. It's a complete system that is grab and go. In a small pack it is covert. Not like.a full size shotgun......you could walk around town with this combat shotgun and blend in
                              Without upsetting the general population.

                              3. This shotgun is built very well. Good construction is important. Some on
KTOG have thousands of rounds including magnum loads without issue.
Avoid a forward vertical grip and go with an AFG. Search YouTube for
Hickok45 videos on this shotgun. He nailed it.

                              4. You could hunt with this gun. Shooting Slugs with good sights you have a
                              Rifle. Very accurate.

                              5. I have Magpul flip up sights as backup and an EoTech as primary. Incredible
Sight picture thru the EoTech. Even with my bad eyes I could pick off a rabid dog
                              At 125 yards.

                              6. Maybe find a member in your area who will let you shoot one? I will say a lim saver butt pad really helps. Loaded with 14 rounds, slugs and buck the weight
                              Does help with recoil.

                              Be well
                              Bob
