I know, kind of a silly question. But, my reasoning is this: With the possibility of semi-auto's being banned in Ca., I'm thinking semi-auto shotguns aren't too far behind. So, again, my question; what is the most comfortablr[softest?] 12ga pump? This would be for upland bird hunting. Mossberg 500 "All Purpose Field" with ported barrels? As I'm getting up there in age[65], wanting something a bit easier to shoot. 20ga? Waterfowl is not in the mix. Thanks shooters.

Most comfortable 12ga pump

Generally, you will find the gun that fits you properly to be the most comfortable to shoot. 12 or 20 is fine. Heavier guns are often more comfortable to shoot but not a lot of fun to carry for long periods of time.
Lighter loads and barrel porting may help as well. -
Couldn't agree more! A gun the fits properly and lighter loads will be the best benefit to comfort. Shooting vests/shirts with pads/inserts can also help absorb some of the recoil.
I have a couple of ported guns and while I don't see the benefit, many others say there is a benefit.
Bottom line...get out and enjoy he hunt while you can. I could see the state banning hunting before banning semi-autos.Comment

I've always been an older Remington 870 guy (yeah, I am older and the older 870s are just much nicer made in my opinion) the steel receiver is nice too---more weight to absorb kick---also the newer recoil pads are so much better than the old rock-solid pads---I also have a mercury recoil reducer installed in the stock to further absorb kick. If the kick still bothers you, a strap-on shoulder recoil pad will knock a bunch off...Comment

Michael,
One of my concerns of the S/A is they may ban them outright; in other words, can't use 'em. If this happens, can I still even own one. I know, silly question, but, this is Ca. I put NOTHING past these A-holes.Comment

I had a limbsaver grind to fit recoil pad added to my Mossy 590 A1. Makes a big difference. Would do the same on an 870.Comment

My favorite pump, now that you mention 20ga, is a Browning Upland Special...straight stock, 21" barrel. Light weight and easy to handle, and very light recoil with upland loads.True wealth is time. Time to enjoy life.

I was thinking the same thing. If you think semi-autos will be banned, now would be a good time to buy as many as you can and flip them for a profit later. Some folks did that with handguns when the SSE was going to make many models of handguns unavailable in California.Comment

KSG - try it yourself & see. They are awesome shooters, comfortable & have 2 mag tubes so 2x the rounds. I've put over 1k rounds of all types & brands & sizes through mibe with zero issues. It's a dream shotgun to shoot.10 +1 in the chamberComment

Cross the bridge when you get to it. History suggests that possession will be grandfathered if banned.
In reality, even if the legislature goes off the rails crazy train style, I can't see a wide semiauto shotgun ban passing. I can see unconventional shotguns being banned - like the KSG - magazine shotguns being banned - Saiga, Vepr - and tube-fed shotguns restricted to 5 shots. At worst.
So buy a semi auto. Lots of people recommend the Beretta Outlander as a solid inexpensive choice. I say: buy a Vepr.

Semi Auto shotguns aren't going anywhere. You think they're going to a) ban them and b) confiscate them? If that happens you'll have a whole lot more to worry about than a comfortable pump gun. We all will. Because I damn sure am not surrendering anything. Not a pistol, not shotgun, not one single mag. And I know a lot of others who won't surrender anything either. So then what happens? Molon Labe!
And beside, they're legal now. So go buy one. Otherwise get an 870 or a Mossberg and throw a Limbsaver on it or a Knox stock. Or get a Benelli with a Comfortech stock."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."
