    H&R Single Shot

I was at Big 5 looking at some stuff and noticed a H&R single shot 12 guage for $150! I have never owned or even shot a shotgun but this is very tempting.. I can't find the model on their website though... opinions?

Meh. They're very light, so in a 12ga they kick like a mule. Not very fun after the 10th round. They make good "loaner" guns for when you and a buddy want to go shoot trap and he doesn't have a shotgun.

The H&R single shot is a good shotgun for beginners especially when you are teaching newbies how to handle a shotgun. Basically fail proof due to the external hammer and is easy to operate. The only problem is the weight and the single shot ability. When using high brass stuff, it will leave a nice bruise on your shouder while regular birdshot is okay. The single shot will prevent you faster follow up shots but ask Clint Smith what he can do with a single shot. What I personally like about the single shot is that when you go and try shooting clay birds, you tend to focus more and learn to become a better shot.

      Conclusion:
Good shotgun for beginners but save a little more and get either a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 if you want bigger capacity.

I have one of these in 20 gauge.. ask the fellow shooting a high zoot Browning single shot at the trap line what he thought of a $100 plain barrel gun nearly beating him at 16 yd trap I shot a 22, he shot a 23.

It's not the gun, it's the shooter.

I would strongly sugest buying one of the rifles. You can send it back to H&R to have them fit a number of shotgun/ rifle barrels to it. The last time I checked it only cost about $80+ per barrrel depending on caliber/ guage and sights/ finish. I have two and they are great little guns.

If you buy the shotgun version from the store H&R WILL NOT fit any centerfire barrel to it. Its a policy thing for them for some reason and they track them by serial number so they know the difference. That's why I recomend getting the rifle version first and sending it back for another barrel to be fit.

Great gun. Their 308 varmit upper is amazingly accurate.

Yeah, you can kind of think of them as the long gun comparison to T/C's Contender/Encore. Fancy they are not, but functional they are. It teaches you and anyone else that the first shot is the most important.
