    Shotgun scabbard...

    Hi guys...

Saw some cool looking scabbards online but I'm wondering if a scabbard is legal to carry a shotgun in CA?

Really depends on your local jurisdiction. Why would you need to open carry a shotgun by the way?

      Just wondering.

I sometimes carry one on the backpack when needed on my friend's ranch. We have been caught trout fishing and also cutting down dead trees for firewood by black bears and mountain lions in the past. The shotgun is mainly to scare them off, the .500 mag on my hip will do the needful if necessary.

Reason is just convenience. When heading to the range, it would be much easier, less cumbersome and lighter to carry shotgun in scabbard over my back along with a small pistol bag in my hand than with my larger 2-rifle bag setup.

But since the stock would be exposed, I suppose that does qualify as "open carry" and thus, may not be acceptable in my part of CA (norcal)?

I think it depends on the county you're in.

How are you "heading to the range?"

If you're just talking about from your house to vehicle, then from vehicle in the range parking lot to the actual range, I believe you'd be good to go with the scabbard. (Doesn't make it right, but) I've seen people carrying their shotguns to the trap and skeet fields at both Oak Tree and Prado, not in cases but over their shoulders.

Scabbards are definitely nicer than a large rifle or long gun bag/case if you don't have any accessories you need to carry directly with the shotgun. I have one from Condor (I think) and it holds a home-defense Remington 870 with side-saddle just fine. Easy to pick up and carry if need be.

Just don't walk around a school, park, or any other "Gun Free Zone" to be safe.
