Just got a Mossberg 500 Flex!

First shotgun! I've had some experience shooting the Remington 870, and my brother's Mossberg 500, as well as a break-barrel shotgun. I didn't want to go for a tacticool one, and this one does give me the flexibility to change things around later if I decide. So far it's been 2 days in jail. I think I payed a little on the high end ($513 OTD), but I'll enjoy it. Does anyone have suggestions for things to add to it? I'm primarily getting it for shooting clay, but it will also serve as home defense (if it's closer at hand than my pistol). I have no experience in competitive shooting, but I suppose that's a possibility down the line.

Buy several cases of shotgun shells and put some rounds through it. Make sure it works completely well before you dedicate it as your HD gun.

I wouldn't change much on it. Buy a short barrel for it if you'll use it for HD.

Buy some HD loads as well. #4 buck, high powered birdshot.

    Get out and shoot it!

Shoot it a bunch before you spend $$.

I just jailed my first shotgun today (Beretta A300). Shot clays for the first time two weeks ago and I'm hooked.

I got to fondle a Beretta DT11 Sporting the other day. Got a little dizzy holding that one...

Nice! hopefully you'll have fun with it and make it a nice dedicated HD pump.

          That is always fun.
I was at SHOT show one year a picked up a nice looking shotgun. Then I glanced down at the price. I quickly and carefully set it down.
It was a four barrel set Perazzi with a price tag of $80,000.

Any suggestions for an HD barrel and load? I can't spend too much more on it right now, but so I can keep an eye out (barrel).

Just get a security barrel like this for $80, if it works on the 500 Flex. I don't know anything about the Flex or if will take this barrel.

Everything I've read so far says that the 500 Flex will take anything for any Mossberg 500. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong on this?

                Thanks for the link Chewy!

I bought the matte black one this morning.

Thanks again Chewy! I looked at the gun show in Sac this weekend and didn't see anything comparable for a reasonable price, so I went ahead with CTD. I also got a surefire flashlight, and a decently reviewed picatinny rail (I didn't want to get the railed handguard) I'm pretty sure I have a flashlight ring around here somewhere.

Not the most expensive flashlight, but in general it sounds like it will fulfill the requirements for a defensive shotgun.

Federal LE Tactical w/Flight Control is some of the best you can buy IMO. Comes in either 8 pellet or 9, in either regular or reduced recoil.

These guys usually have a decent daily price and will put it on sale from time to time...although it's been awhile since I've bought any but I assume they still put it on sale. They will also give you free shipping if you buy a case of 250.

                    Congrats on the purchase!

Federal Law Enforcement 12 Gauge Ammunition 2-3/4" 00 Buckshot 9 Pellets - LE13200 at Target Sports USA with free shipping available. Enjoy deals on 1|^||^|

Finally made it back to the store; I caught whatever bug had been going around so it took a while. I can't wait to take her out and shoot some clay!

For home defense (shorter distances than say a Trap shoot) you will need to aim. And if you are going to need to aim, you'll want *all* of the shot to into the bad guy and not a nearby wall to eg your kids room, apartment wall.

In this case the Federal Flight Control, and Hornady Versa-Tight (or whatever its called) will help ensure that a VERY tight column of shot is going to a controlled location.

Home defense, legal self protection in this case, is about stopping a threat before, or before any more, immanent harm to your loved ones. Its not about wounding. Its not about taking a half cantaloupe size rat-hole out of their middle. As such say no to bird shot. Bird shot is for stopping birds, buck shot is for stopping mammals.

With those two notions covered, both of the above mentioned companies make excellent buckshot products with the non-traditional wads you want. I prefer #4 buck because I like LOTS of distinct wound tracks, but #1 and 00 are also fantastic choices. Disregarding my own advice due to the layout of my house, I prefer a particular Federal #4 load that jams 34 pellets into a 2.75 inch shell. Did I say LOTS of wound tracks?

Sorry no pictures, but I took it to Richmond Rod and Gun and it went well! Shot skeet with a few other guys, and trap once they left. I need more skeet practice. Put 100 rounds through it, and had a blast. Also enjoyed some pistol shooting (: I can post my 15 yard target later. I didn't count the rounds. The laserlyte trainer certainly helped.
