Yeah. I was watching a high school meet at Coon Creek awhile back. Teenagers with adult "supervision" would take the empties from their hand (those shooting breech loaders) and throw them on the ground. Huh?

Some clubs/ranges have folks paid to clean up, but seriously.

Guess what summer job my teenage son would have if he did that?

Triple BBB's doesn't seem to care if you eject your shells on the ground either.

all it takes is 1 person to leave some shells for other people to start doing the same

Coon creek is always like that. While it may not be right, many shooters let their hulls fly. I have seen tons of shooters leaving their hulls on the ground. Usually, it is the more experienced shooters that are letting their hulls fly. It can be good for me though as I get all the free premium hulls I need for reloads.

Coon creek does have employees that pick up the hulls but some people just don't seem to care because the guy before him left them on the ground.

There is no reason to expect someone to clean up after you. Yes, I have walked away and forgotten before. I used to shoot an over under and collected my own shells. I now and shooting an auto and I have gone back to pick up when I have forgotten to pick up. To purposely throw them on the ground is presumptuous and pretty disgraceful. Most clubs give high schools a discount.

I don't expect everything handed to me. Just set it down anywhere. Unknown

Is the "brass" on shotgun shells magnetic? I have a great idea for picking up any casings made of steel that litter the range. Brass I usually p/u by hand but I am buying a couple strong neodymium magnet strips to place on a 12" steel rake and use it to rake up the casings.

What do you think? It should be able to p/u most of the casings that litter my private range as it is mostly the steel that gets left behind (i.e. not reloadable)

Most cheap shotshells are only copper plated, they have steel underneath and can be picked up with magnets.

There is no need to reinvent the wheel though, go get one of these Mojo Pick Stick, I have 2, wife and I use them when we shoot trap at a local range:

We use these Harbor Freight Magnetic Pickup Tools at our club for the 3 gun matches to pick up hulls and steel cased ammo.We set it out with a 5 gallon bucket , while the targets are being reset, someone grabs the tool and bucket and picks up the hulls.
For less than $10 everyone should have one.
