Rock Island M5 12 Gauge update

So with about 135 shells run through the newbie $187, sale coupon Big 5, I had had some ejection problems probably because the heat shield screw and barrel clamp screws were coming loose. Locktite and a good strong turn now seemed to solve that.

As I was in Parker Az. off Cienega Springs Rd. recently, hang a right and stay right past the Desert Bar sign. You'll run into a decent shooting spot just off Hwy 95 North.

Ran 75 shells of Herters with just 1 shell with brass expansion, needing a firm eject. Other than that, with now over 200 rds. she is running nice. No cleaning or lube in between the 3 boxes, load and go.

I like this cheapy. I now have 3 light coats of Formsby Tung oil on the cheap plastic stock and that seems to be making it hold up well. Clean it and toss a light coat on it. As in my previous post the plastic stock is probably the biggest turn off, no it is, then the extra pound in weight but I like to hip shoot so that doesn't bother me.

Strong 4 of 5 stars and would buy again.

Thanks for the report. That sounds like a nice shotgun. I look forward to updates regarding its durability.

I've gotta mind to get one of these and turn it into a copy of a trench gun. I won't feel bad about wasting only $200 if I screw up.

I may go up to the Big 5 this weekend. Definitely, thanks for the report.

I want to mod mine a bit. Just a magazine tube. Don't know if that's possible. I like it fine except that for some reason it doesn't break clays at 3-gun terribly well.

It is possible . There is a tube out there that will turn that shotgun into a 7+1. I think it's from a company called KAK Industry.

Forgive my ignorance, buy why would you put tung oil on a plastic stock?

It helps bring out the grain of the plastic I hear

Formsby Tung oil is not really tung oil. It's more like a poly resin that hardens like "plastic".

The rubber used on these stocks is crapola and will get dull and beat up looking real quick. I'm trying to keep somewhat of a sheen to the black magic stock with a product I had laying around.

Look at someones stock with no protection after a year of use and then mine.

My shotgun exercise consists of 6 clays.

Start with a box of shells on the hip in a pouch. Load 6.

Toss a clay in the air with left hand. Boom

Have (3) clays on the ground about 20 yrds away spaced about 15 ft. apart. Hip shoot em, bang bang bang

Now shoulder the weapon and aim for the big trash some a-hole left with a clay on it at 40-50 yards, times (2) bang bang...

You're empty and now on the walk. Hopefully you dug thru the dumpster and found 2-3 glass beer twelve pack holders and placed them on the ground about 20-30 yrds away. When you hit them on the move, they move. Combat load 1 and bang, keep walking back and forth chasing those twelvers dancing in the dirt. Combat load and shoot 15 or so. Mix it up, hip and shoulder work.

                    Good Times

                      Another 125 shells ran thru.

                      (2) of the Wally world cheap 100 pack were difficult to eject but easier than last time. Just a strong racking.

This baked on silvery finish has about 3or4 pin hole spots now where the finish is gone. Not too noticeable unless you really focus on imperfections.

I only dry ragged the gun down after 75 rds, no lube.

                      She is preforming well.

Expanding on the spots I've provided a couple pics so one can see exactly what I mean. I'm not super anal about protecting the condition of my weapons, those who are should imo stay away from this beast and it's wacky finish. I do however always lay my weapon down on its case on the tailgate or bench. I don't abuse them either.

Tell us a little about it. Finish? Where you got the furniture and how much mod it took.

How many rounds thru the beast? Run well?

Shameless plug of my M5 on sale in the sales corner...

From my experience. Its a beast of a tactical shotgun. Most of my other 18.5 inchers measures about 6-7 lbs. The M5 is about about a pound more. Which will help tame recoil. Action is real sleek. With no rounds in the chamber you can tilt the barrel upward, the action flies open from gravity alone. Like everyone else said, the finish aren't refined ... but its a tactical shotgun so I can care less.

Interested Rev's refinished job? Cerakote receiver? Blue or phosphate barrel? Or did the M5 ever come in black? I know aftermarket seller like numrich has wood furniture ... is that what you did?
