I have a 24" m2. figured use it for shotgun matches and clay shooting. haven't gotten around trying any matches, but shoot trap occasionally. works just fine for trap. shot a decent but few rounds and have shot in the 20-22 range a couple times.

Is m2 the preferred choice for 3 gun? I was going to buy an m4 for home defense and dabble in 3 gun down the road, but m2 sounds fine as well.

I have a Salient M2, just like a TTI, that is 7 years old. Love it. It runs and easy to clean, when I have to clean it. Does not get that dirty compared to a gas shotgun. Have not had one issue with it. Had a Remington 1100 Competition Master for 7 years. Ran fine for 3 years, sucked for 4 years. Get the Taran Tactical, he has shot 3 gun for years and knows what works and why, you won't be sorry. M2 is the choice for 3 gun over the M4 and any other shotgun in my opinion.

TTI M2 is an excellent choice. I didn't realize that Benelli still made the 3-gun model. I almost never see them.

Neither. For a customized Benelli M2 try, http://triangleshootingsports.com/products/shotgun/

They are the ones Benelli farms out the M2 Performance Shop work, but you can have a variety of barrel lengths including a 26" barrel which is better suited for what you want.

Taran. I looked at this quite awhile ago and if memory serves Taran does a lot more to his gun than what comes on the factory Benelli 3 Gun unit.

Yes, M2 is preferred for 3 Gun. The M4 is gas driven vs. the M2 which is inertia driven. So the M4 is a little softer shooting. The problem with the M4, however, is that there are no other barrel options for it. I mean, there's a 14 inch barrel for it but nothing longer than 18.5" and most 3 Gunners are looking for longer barrels to a accommodate longer mag tubes. So most 3 Gunners go with the M2.

The downside to the M2, however, is that because it's inertia driven, you can't put a lot of weight on it (ie accessories) as that may affect it's ability to cycle. This shouldn't matter for 3 gun since they don't usually need a lot of accessories but if you wanted to deck it out and make it tacticool with lights, lasers, optics, shell carriers, etc., it could be problematic.

Now, if you really want the m4 gas system, you can take a look at the Remington Versamax. The patent on the m4 ran out a year or two ago and Remington more or less copied it and put it into their Versamax. A regular Versamax is...or at least was...a bit cheaper than the m4 and Remington does put out a 3 Gun version...which I believe is loads cheaper than a custom decked out m2. The Versamax seems to be catching on...likely due to its price...and it will be interesting to see if it surpasses the m2 as the 3 Gun shotgun of choice. It seems to be doing well with respect to reliability.

And why Benelli doesn't make a couple longer barrels for the m4 is beyond me. Seems like a no brainer and they could sell a ton. But perhaps this way it forces people to buy a whole new Benelli shotgun instead of just a barrel. At least that would be my guess...but it's really annoying.

Just checked...$1733 for a Versa Max 3 Gun on Remington's site vs. $2500 for the Benelli 3 Gun on their site.

have never tried 3 gun but from what I've read it does seem like an M2 is a top contender for preferred shotgun. I started to see a lot of people go with a stoeger m3000. from what I've read it seems as though the stoeger m3000 is nearly similar to a Benelli M2. I believe it I recall reading, stoeger is a sister company to Benelli and the stoeger m3000 is basically built off the M2 inertia system. there are a lot of m2 parts that fit on the stoeger m3000 and is nearly half the price.
