New stock for 870

I have an old 12 ga 870 and the stock is broken.

Looking for a simple replacement with some reduction in recoil. The original wood furniture with the hardened piece of what used to be rubber is just painful and not fun to shoot, especially for my wife.

Looking at recoil reduction stocks, reading reviews, etc. Pro's, Con's to all of them. Is it worth the extra money for the Knoxx SpecOps (the gen 3 is not supposed to cheek slap like gen 2) or one of the other systems, Phoenix, or should I just go stock with a good recoil pad?

Don't mind spending a little extra if it really works to reduce the recoil some.

I would avoid any products with Knoxx on the box and almost any product produced/resold by Blackhawk.

If you want real recoil reduction, I think it would be hard to compete with a limbsaver recoil pad. They make several models and one should be compatible with your shotgun. Since your stock is broken, you could get a OEM wood set (factory take off on ebay) or an OEM synthetic stock set and simply upgrade to the limbsaver pad with a couple of screws.

The Hogue mentioned above is a good option, I have had good luck with that particular stock, and if you like a shorter LOP you can get the youth model. I love their forend too.

The Magpul SGA stock also has a pretty heavy duty rubber butt pad and you can adjust the LOP your self. I admittedly have only used mine with target loads but it just got switched over to my new 870 which has HD in mind.

If you like pistol grip stocks the Mesa Tactical Urbino stocks are available, and you can get a model with a pre-fit limbsaver recoil pad mentioned above. A little pricier but may suit your needs and preferences.

I have replaced the Remington factory recoil pads on 870s with the Remington SuperCell pads and I think they work great. Cost less and felt better than Limbsaver or Remington R3 pads that I had tried.

I replaced the stock on my Vang Comp 870 with a Choate Pistol Grip. It came with a great recoil pad.

I would put Limbsaver > Hogue > Supercell.

I had a Supercell on a .270 and thought it was trash. Punched my already repaired shoulder and made it uncomfortable to shoot. Swapped it for a Limbsaver and was able to shoot all day no problem.

I traded a part I had extra for a Knoxx stock for my 870. I was very disappointed in the recoil reduction part. It looks nice, but the recoil reduction is nowhere near what was advertised.

Yea, seems like the whole idea is kind of hokey to me and I don't like things moving towards my face that don't need to be. A good quality recoil pad on a solid stock with a little bit of technique go a long way towards felt recoil reduction.

Does anyone know if it's a fair comparison for how a recoil pad works on a 12 gauge vs. a .270? Rifle powder vs Shotgun powder (different burn rates)? I thought the SuperCell was an improvement on the shotgun.

If it works, then it works, but seems like you weren't that happy with the outcome. Even if you are not recoil shy or a child, 12ga can be punishing.

That's a good question, I would imagine that the .270 would recoil faster than the 12ga so maybe in that specific application the Supercell is a good choice? I thought the Supercell was kind of foamy and didn't compress very much to spread out the recoil impulse where limbsaver seems to have more of a squishy, compressible rubber. I have heard a lot of good things about the Supercell, my limited personal experience simply hasn't matched.

I hope it works at that price. I think I would have to try one before spending that much.

As usual asking questions leads to more questions. I have shot a pistol grip only shotgun, not a tactical one like the AR type. I'm sure there is no real comparison between the AR recoil vs a shotgun so I'm not sure I would even like that on the 870.

I am leaning toward a used stock and a LS for now until I try out some friends toys.
