    Benefit Trapshoot

For those of you in the Central Valley or who may want to travel, I'd like to invite you to a benefit trapshoot to be held on April 16 at Newman Swamp Rats, which is located at 1204 Hills Ferry Road in Newman.

Rich Gray was a longtime family friend and squad leader of one of the two Winter League teams that I sponsor. He lost his fight with cancer last spring, and we're holding this benefit in his honor, the proceeds to go towards Community Hospice Foundation of Modesto.

The format will be shooter-driven old-school meat shoot style. Basically, eight shooters step to the line and shoot once from each post. Winner takes the prize. Instead of basic singles and handicap distances though, we're going to bring it back to when Rich and his cohorts started. You want to shoot a Do-Si-Do on the wobble trap from the 27 yard line? Go ahead! You want a big dog-little dog buddy shoot? Bring it on! We will keep it safe, but we'd like to welcome novices and experienced shooters.

Lunch will be available, Starbucks is setting up one of their benefit kiosks, and we'll be raffling off a few guns as well as holding a bucket raffle with some really nice prizes. Please contact me if you'd like to donate something to the raffle as well.

I've got a Facebook page going to keep people up to date at: Rich Gray Memorial Shoot

Well, some of them are older than I've been shooting, but they used to play more than they do now. This isn't formal 16-handicap-doubles stuff. It used to be often shot for meat or money. Say it's a Do-Si-Do. This is shot in teams of two. So eight teams walk up to the line, and each one gets a pair of doubles at each post. Left guy shoots at the left bird, right guy shoots at the right bird. If we do this on the wobble oscillating trap, it's more challenging than it sounds.

Then, when they move one post down, they switch positions. Carry on until each team has shot each post. Shoot-offs may happen. Winning pair gets the prizes.

That's just one example; there are quite a few games like that. Eight guys on a trap set really fast, say, or a buddy shoot where the first guy in a team shoots and if they miss, then his partner tries at it. There will be some simpler games for rookies too, because we don't want to exclude them.
