    870 tube extension question...

I have an 18" 870 synthetic with a 4+1 capacity. I read somewhere that you need to have a certain part in order to get the tube extensions to work. What piece do I need, and is there a certain tube extension that is compatible with it?

Thanks to anyone that helps in advance.

There is a small bump in the tube that will prevent the follower from going past the 4 +1 capacity. A little dremel work will take care of that bump.

Do I have to dremel the bump off? I'd rather not dremel my guns if I can help it.

I am not aware of a work-around to this, but it is rather quick. In fact, I don't think I had a dremel when I rounded off the dimple (or dimples) - I think I just used a rounded file.

Alright, sounds simple enough. I even found a thread where this dude used his socket set, oil, and a hammer in order to remove the dimples in the tube.

            Interesting method I might add...

The socket method is risky. The easiest way is to drill them out with a 3/16" drill bit and clean the holes up with sandpaper, fine round file or a dremel. The holes won't be seen because the barrel ring will cover them.

Read this thread on what can happen using the socket method. If you damage the mag tube it is costly to replace.

I am an idiot.I followed advice given me by several sources and decided to go with the socket method of removing the dimples from the mag tube of a Remington 870. Now that socket is jammed in there s

The socket thing is a pain in the arse. It's a bastard to get back out once it's in. Use a dremel and use the little pointy grinding stone, it will probably take you less than 30 seconds to get it done. literally takes about 3-5 seconds of grinding on the dimple
It's better to have it, and not need it, then to need it, and not have it.

They said in order to get the socket out you just push in more sockets to pop it out.

Do most people just dremel it?

Put a socket in there that is as close to the right size as you have. Hit the tube with a hammer and you should be good to go.

Be fearful of the dremel but not in this case. You can even drill a hole in both sides and it will be fine.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

Alright, it seems as if dremeling the dimple would be easier than using the socket method. Thanks a lot, guys.

Thats the method I used and I have had no problems with it at all. The only difference is I used some 5w30 in a thin layer to keep it from running all over the place.

When I did mine awhile back, I just ran the dremel in there for about 20 seconds and it was good to go. If you go this route, be sure to thoroughly clean all the little filings out of the mag tube.

It's easier to do than it sounds.
