    Non-petrol based cleaning agents

Hi all, I'm not sure where to put this but it is shotgun related.

My wife & I went shooting this weekend as we often do and she made a big decision: "I don't want you to have to clean all this by yourself. It's not fair for you to do all the work." So she was wanting to learn how to clean her 20g. I pulled out the Hoppes solvent and immediately the coughing and wheezing started. She has a mild form of asthma and certain smells really choke her up.

As soon as she left the room it stopped and she just watched me work so she could see how it's done. Smartly she asked, "Are there any natural mineral based cleaning agents out there?". I realized that I have never asked anyone because I've never had a need.

So that's the question; Is there a powder solvent that is not made from the same base as Hoppes? She has a much more diminished reaction to CLP for lubing but would still like a less aromatic version of that as well.

    Thanks!

Do you have any experience with Slip? I'm not finding much in terms of how strong the aroma is. I do see from midway it's water based but people are also complaining about it stripping blued finishes. I'm extra careful about finishes since my wife's shotgun is hydrocoated and thus even more delicate than a blued finish.

I use it, it works well. It does not have an offensive chemical smell, it smells more like citrus to me. (think simple green, but even less fragrant)

Thanks for the MSDS, that does tell a lot... Have you seen any adverse results in terms of harming the finish? I'm definitely concerned about the hydrocoat on her Mossberg and other people saying that it'll strip finishes under normal circumstances.

The one CLP that I know of that has very little smell, and whatever smell it has is very subtle, smells like bubble gum; That's the SEAL 1 CLP.

I prefer the G96 Complete Gun Treatment myself, it does smell but it is a pleasant smell, and it is much cheaper than SEAL 1.

Thank you all for the responses. The Seal 1 sure looks like a viable option. It takes a quality product to get as many high marks as that has got on amazon.

Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a product that both cleans & lubricates effectively. Products that claim they do both do neither well. A product that cleans will have ingredients that dissolve - including dissolving lube.

I'll let you do the final research. I believe "M-Pro 7" and "Simple Green" are not petroleum-based and I've often used these on my firearms.
