Add rear sight to older Mossberg 500

I have a circa 1991 Mossberg 500, 20" tactical shotgun. Similar to the 50597 currently on the Mossberg website. I have kept it as a home defense gun, and am now considering taking the Front Sight shotgun course with it. I believe you are shooting slugs at up to 100 yds in that course, but the gun only has a front bead sight. I am thinking a rear sight would be advantageous. The receiver on this shotgun was not pre-drilled for a rail (I think due to the vintage). The options I have have come up with thus far are: saddle mount (weaver or B-square, any others?), gunsmith (drill and tap receiver), or new gun.

Does anyone have experience with the saddle mount systems? Opinions?

If the gunsmith options is a better one, any recommendation in the Silicon Valley area?

Any options I haven't considered?

It might cost less to buy a new or a used one with the sights already on it the only advantage of the old is its what you have available. I picked up a used one a few months ago for 300 and change its tapped for sights but for some reason it feels a lot lighter than the older persuader that I have which is from the late 90's. I'm thinking for my newer one I'm going to put a peep sight and a fiber optic blade up front.

This. Keep the old one and just get a new one of your liking. For what it's worth, yes there is slug shooting in FS shotgun class. It isn't the major focus and most of the slugs are shot at 25 and 35 yards.

A buddy and I went to ITTS in southern CA a few years ago. He used a beaded shotgun and could hit out to 100 yards with it. It's not that difficult.

By all means if you want to modify your shotgun, do so. You won't need to do it.

There should be no problem using a bead sight out to 100 with slugs
My 18.5 inch mossberg 590A1 has them and I prefer it that way
putting front a rear sights on a beaded shotgun is expensive

I have no problems hitting a 12x18 silhouette at 100 yards with rifled slugs using the beads on my M500. I'd say that if you were to spend x amount of dollars on a sight and mount, or x amount of dollars on slugs and range time, the latter would probably be more beneficial.

im sure you can find it even cheaper but midway has a new barrel for 139. it has rifle sights .

Then put a red-dot on it and be tacticool.
