    Mossberg "security"?

I've searched through the forum and haven't been able to find an answer to this.

After reading much of the information here, I've decided that a Mossberg 590 is in my future. The larger capacity magazine tube is what makes this more appealing than the 500 combo model at Big 5. So I continue looking and voila, Big 5 has a Mossberg "security" on sale for $249 here:

I tried to confirm which model this was on the Mossberg website, but alas, their model names didn't seem to line up, or my searching was not good enough.

Is the "Security" the 590? The sale ends tomorrow so I'd like to find out.

I believe it is still a 500A with different options and barrel

I went with the combo because the 28" barrel I could use for clay sports was more attractive than 2 extra shell capacity.

        It's probably a 500A with an 18.5" 'riot' barrel.

the one Big 5 sells as the security model is actually Mossbergs 500 special purpose "Persuader" 8 shot

The 590 looks like this...this is another one that is sold at Big 5 alot

          The 590a1 looks like this.....
This is typically what people think of when they refer to the 590..

Thanks! It does seem to be the Persuader 8 shot. Now I have to decide if that extra shot is worth the price difference. Of course, I dont know how much the 590 or the 590a1 actually costs. Any ideas?

Mossberg persuader 8 shot vs 9

This is what I have learned about the mossberg 500 vs 590. It is according to me, what I have seen and what I have experienced.

The 500 and 590 are different guns. Different receivers, different actions, different materials, etc. But there are a bunch of 500's currently, and only a few 590's so far.

The 500 is the "mid-level" and is only in 12 gauge (though there is a 505 which is 20 gauge). I shot one just last night, and it was fantastic. So fantastic I went out and bought one after lunch today. It cost 249.99 plus a bunch of fees/taxes which made it 295 out the door. The 500 is supposed to be super-reliable. I saw someone take off a thumb screw, then remove the barrel for cleaning. Wow!

The 500 can hold 4 to 7 shells, depending on how long the shell tube is. The one at big 5 had a 20 inch barrel and a full length tube - this holds 7.

The 590 is the "high-level" and is also only in 12 gauge. I held one at the gun store. It feels heavier, though it is supposed to be only 1/4 pound more. Its the gun used by the NYPD and also in Iraq. It was listing at $545, which would work out to be twice as expensive as the 500. But the 590 is a totally different gun. It ALSO has a 20 inch barrel and shell tube, but the 590 can hold 8+1 shells (I don't know how that's possible, but that's what the info from Mossberg says). The 590 is supposed to be even more reliable than the 500, which says a lot since the 500 is super reliable.

I bought the 500 instead of the Remington 870 because the 500 held more bullets and had a shorter barrel. I also test fired the 500 and found it to be uneventful, which is exactly what I want from a "home defense" shotgun.

My only wish was that the same gun would have come in a 20 gauge. By that I mean a 20 inch barrel, 7+1 shot in 20 gauge straight from the store. I am nursing a badly bruised shoulder from the 500's fierce kick.

question for anybody with the 50577 persuader ('security' from big5):

did yours come with a dowel / mag limiter?

mine did not... it's also a little scratched up where the barrel meets the receiver. not a big deal, just wondering if mine was toyed with at some point or if only the hunting oriented models come with the limiter.

You can probably talk the Manager of a Big 5 to selling the 590 for around 336.00 since that it was it sales for when it is on special. I did.

I would suggest it over the 500. Nothing wrong with the 500 but the 590 is built beefier

unless you have your heart set on the mossys... for $300+ ... Id just get an 870.

I have both, and 870 is my fav.

                            Shotgun newbie question:

I picked this up from Big5 as well, but from the looks of the barrel it does not appear to have threads for a choke tube. So do I or do I not need a choke for this?

I have the 590 & love it. Managed to get dirty looks from couple of *serious* skeet shooters at the range last month when I hit clay firing from the hip with it. I thought it was a fluke until I did it twice more. Still not sure how the heck I managed that but it did put a smile on my face (& a frown on theirs..)
