Ah...slugs out of a shotgun, the closest thing to a canon the average citizen can have to shoot with. Such a fun ammunition.

Slugs are relatively expensive compared to other types of shotgun ammo, for high volume plinking (high being a relative term ), I like to use those cheap Rio Star low recoil slugs which you can other from http://www.ammosupplywarehouse.com/.

    Link: http://www.ammosupplywarehouse.com/c...TGUN-SLUG.html

    $138.99 per case of 250.

Beware though, shooting a lot of slugs will lead your barrel heavily. Make sure you have good bore brush like a Tornado brush available to clean the barrel afterwards. Or, you can wrap some 0000 steelwool around a old bore brush and use it to clean the lead out.

I make my own. I got a Lee shotgun shell loader and a Lee slug mold. Its very cheap to do and they are a lot of fun to shoot.

Sort of an off-shoot question from this...I have an 870 and have an actual slug hunting barrel; 18 inch, smooth bore, rifle sights. I might have occasion to hunt some pigs in non-lead country. Any suggestions for good performing non-lead, rifled slugs? Thanks!

My buddy likes the Barnes bullet loaded sabot slugs from Federal.

edit to add: Just noticed you said it was a smooth bore slug barrel, nevermind.

Any educated comments on slugs and choke use?

Last time I was at Walmart in Simi Valley they had an amazing selection of 12 gauge slugs, including rifled slugs. None of them unleaded though.

Generally, only shoot them with Modified or Improved Cylinder Chokes with IC said to give best accuracy results but every barrel is different so experiment. Slugs can be safely fired through a standard Full Choke but accuracy usually isn't as good but I have read some get good accuracy so once again every barrel is different.

                    From Mossberg's Site

"Can I shoot slugs or buckshot through a "smoothbore" field barrel with Accu-Choke™ tubes? (500/505/535/9200/88/930 models)

Yes, and with sabots or rifled slugs, the more "open" the choke tube, the better the accuracy ("Improved Cylinder" recommended.) The "full" or "modified" choke tubes are preferred for buckshot loads. Slugs, buckshot and steel shot loads are not recommended for use with an extra full "turkey tube" installed, due to the tube's tight constriction. Do not fire any load without a choke tube installed, doing so will damage the internal choke tube threads."

Slugs will be fine out of an 18.5" smoothbore barrel. Try something like these:
(former) Glock and 1911 Armorer; LEO (now retired)

For shooting paper targets at 25 yards in an indoor range with a Mossberg 500 with 18.5" cylinder bore barrel (smooth bore no choke), I have found that any factory slug shell...

                          1. Kicked like a jackass.

                          2. Cost way too much at about $1.00 per shell.

If you're gonna shoot often, seriously look into fabricating Lee slugs. The cost will be cheaper and the recoil greatly reduced.

I started by buying target loads, emptying the shot, molding Lee slugs, reinserting them back into the hull and re-crimping.

As you do it more often, it will be cheaper and easier to use pre-primed hulls, wads, Lee slugs, powder.

I enjoy using Federal Truball or equivalents and reaching out to 100 yards respectably. If someone is going to have one firearm and that is a shotgun, slugs certainly should be possessed.

Not all slugs are made equal. I've heard of chokes splitting from shooting slugs. Some rifled slugs measure out very near cylinder bore diameter while others leave lots of wiggle room for a choke.
