    12 ga. "chick ammo"

My wife wanted a 12 ga. for Christmas ,so I picked up a Mossie Persuader and added a Knoxx Specops stock and a Limbsaver recoil pad.
    Now it is ammo time . I am looking for a light ,beginner load.I doubt that she will be shooting past 50 yards . I won't give her the ammo till she passes a beginner shotgun class. {In the 2nd phase of the class they get to shoot}
I know I am a mean husband ,but I am also a safety freak.

look for light or ultra light trap loads..... good for starting off......Winchester and Fiocchi both make low recoil #8 shot loads

Aguila mini shells, even the slugs don't have much recoil on them.

If you bought her the gun for home defense, I would recommend Federal Tactical Low Recoil #4 Buck.

You can shoot some clay pigeons with Federal ammo, the birdshot type you can get in a Walmart. The cheapest 12 gauge ammo around IMO. But, look for shells with "low recoil" or anything less than 1200 FPS.

                  WOW!

Everyone is giving their opinions without anyone knowing what kind of shot shells she needs for her class. Do they want 7 1/2s, 00, slug or something else? If it doesn't matter, I'll say, strart with AA extra lite loads. Then, try AA lite loads. Then, AA standard trap loads. If she's still OK with these, go to AA handicapped loads. Finally, try the Aguila mini 00 and slugs but, remember that the minis won't cycles smoothly in a 500! They are made to function in an 870 with a solid "feed lever thingy" for lack of looking up the right word. After that go to "low recoil" 00 and slugs. Then, send me all the AA hulls!

It's a lot better to start with a really hard hitting shell like a high velocity slug. I did that and everything else never had more kick at all even if it was more high powered. Just the thought of the first round being so hard makes you think less of the other types of ammo out there. But thats just my .02

I am 5'7" tall (or short), 120 lbs heavy(=light). I have a Mossberg 500 12ga with a Knoxx Spec Ops stock, and I shoot Brenneke Black Magic 3" slugs only with it. I had bought a PAST shoulder pad out of "respect" (=fear) for the heavy load - I never needed the shoulder pad. I'm not a tough guy or anything, but I think, if you have that stock AND that shoulder pad, and still find the kick "too much", then it's time to "rearrange" mentally - no offense meant, since you can forget about recoil with these two accessories. I have no attention on recoil at all with just the stock... What most probably will happen is that you buy everything that reduces recoil, then she'll end up using the Spec Ops stock alone.
If she's willing to shoot already, you can tell her that there will always be a little recoil, but it won't ever hurt or feel bad. And that's true. I would put my attention on teaching her how to hold the gun at this point.

                        +1 good points here.

I think its true, I thought I needed a recoil pad on my Remington 870 but after shooting a couple hundred rounds through it, I decided it wasn't worth it.

Now, I am getting ready to shoot my Mosin Nagant 91/30 and the steel butt plate is what's getting me worried.

Anyways, on topic, she should be able to handle all types of ammunition. Like I said earlier, get her started on the big bang of maybe 5 shells and then the rest of the way, go with normal or lighter loads. She'll never forget the big bangs and it will make everything else feel like nothing.

It really depends on her attitude. The last thing you want to do is have her shoot a hot 3 1/2" load and be forever fearful of the gun.

                          Thinkinblue613,

As to the recoil of a M91/30. It's not that bad. The same ammo out of a M38 or M44 will kick like a mule though. Unless, you use some of the 62gr training ammo I've got. I'm sending you a PM.

Try her with Winchester AA Low Noise, Low Recoil shells. They have a Feather on the box, so we call them Featherlights. Wonderful load.

This is exactly what I am afraid of. I want to start with a "cricket load"
and work up till she says 'ouch'.Then we can back off a bit and she will be at the range every weekend.
