Making my 870 Security into a hunting gun

    Hi guys,

So, I know that it may just be easier to buy a new gun like a mossberg combo so I can have one of each, a hunting and HD shotgun.......but just for education purposes, what would I need to do to make my 18" 870 Security into a hunting/clay shooter?

I have a Knoxx SpecOps on it, but I assume that's still valid on a hunting gun.
Then, there's the barrel. I see some used one around the $100 for a 26". What else? On my 870, it has the extended mag...can the "extension" be removed, then a dowel inserted to comply with the restriction? Or, how does that work?

How hard is it to change barrels, remove mag extensions, and change chokes?

    New shotgun, eh?

Chokes screw in at the muzzle w/ a choke wrench. Easy-peasy.

    As for disassembly:

Get a 28" vented rib barrel with rifle sights if possible. You can keep the mag extender but it may look strange. It's really not that hard to replace the barrel. Remington 870's one of the easiest guns to disassemble/assemble. Good luck!

First decide WHAT you're going to hunt, as that will dictate what type of barrell you will get. Most 870's with mag extensions have the one that screws on to the end of the original magazine. Simply unscrew the extension, take the screw cap off the extension, get a shorter spring, and put it back together just like in the video. BTW, you'll probably also have to get a magazine press cap, as most of the of the extensions don't have them.

Do vented rib barrels come with rifle sights? I only saw beads on such barrels...

28" barrel with rifle sights? LOL

              To the OP,

Look into a 26" or 28" bead barrel. If you have your standard buttstock it may be best to put those back on. Get a magazine cap as well as a shorter magazine spring. Lastly, a magazine tube limiter, Remington uses a green plastic plug.
