Looking for a good side by side

im looking for a nice and simple side by side...20 gauge...ive never owned a shotgun but have several rifles and handguns and have always wanted a sidebyside...ive been looking at stoegers but am open to any options...looking to keep it under 500-600...i dont want a 12gauge becuase i think it will have to much kick for what im looking for and i want a common size gauge so i can get ammo anywhere for decent price...any recomendations?

A 12 ga does not kick all that much. I've felt 20's that kick more than a 12. And 12ga ammo is usually cheaper than 20.

For what it's worth, you can get "winlight" ammo in 12 gauge that is basically a 20g loading in a 12g shell. It costs about as much as a 20g shell, but allows you to use the cheaper 12g shells if you like. You'll probably find that a 12g with a long barrel (28" pump in my case) and target birdshot doesn't really kick all that much. Less than my Marlin 30/30 in fact. With hunting birdshot I get a little bite, but not much, still less than the 30/30. There are also those "mini shells" that I presume kick even less than the "winlight" loads.

Now if I put my 18" barrel on there and load it with buckshot or slugs the recoil increases quite a bit, but with the long barrel and birdshot it's no biggie.

Anyway, if you want a 20g, by all means get a 20g, just know that a 12g doesn't HAVE to kick like a mule depending on the barrel length, weight, and load you chose.

For under 500...look on the net for a older used Simson or Ithaca.
