got one and it is a great shooting gun. I have the gen 2 with the single piston and it rocks. I took it out of the box and did an 800 round shotgun course with out a single problem. Its fast, and soft shooting. This has turned into my favorite shotgun.

How can you tell if it's a gen 1 vs gen 2? (aside from the single piston) And are there any other differences between the generations?

And do you know if this is a gen 1 or 2?

      Thanks!

Gen1 comes with 2 gas pistons. One for lighter loads.

I have a Gen 1. It took about 1200 rounds of high base (#6, 00, and slugs) before it would cycle low base. That was with the lighter load piston. I still haven't tested the higher load piston. But 1200 rounds of break-in is excessive IMHO.

Now it runs flawlessly, even on cheap Wally World bulk Federal or Winchester #8.

It sort of drives me nuts they call it competition ready. It's not. The loading port is not beveled. It needs to be. The bolt release is too small. I installed a Nordic Components Speed Button to rectify that. The bolt charging handle is too small and thin. I had to replace it with a Nordic Components SX Bolt Operating Handle. I also swapped out the plastic follower with a Nordic Components aluminum one. The plastic one was sticking.

These are BASIC competition shotgun components and the supposedly race ready SLP Competition didn't come with any of them.

I still need to send it off to someone to have the loading port beveled. I have no idea who does that on FN's though. I don't want to Bubba it myself.

All that being said, I do love the shotgun now and it shore is purdy. It's eye candy at competitions and always gets admiring comments. I shoot it well too, and I guess that's what really matters.

As mentioned by F-2, it's very fast and soft shooting.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I also closed the gap on the lifter at C-Rums. That also should have been done at the factory. I didn't realize C-Rums also did beveling work.

Don't own the Competition, but the SLP is a great platform!

Jeff Cockrum at CRUMS will extend the lifter and bevel the loading port so definitely check him out.
If you're local to SoCal, talk to Randall at AR15Barrels as he did mine a few years ago and did my Beretta 1301 Competition as well.

Have the SLP Competition and it's awesome but make sure you get the Gen 2.

I have one... Its a Gen 2. Shoots everything right out of the box. I LOVE it. Its my favorite shotgun. Like everyone else has said, shoots soft, cycles fast, never a problem... I let my buddies shoot it, and they are huge fans. Get one!

Thanks for the reply guys! How can you tell a gen 1 from a gen?

                    Thanks again!

Before you go the SLP Competition route, make sure you read this thread:

Gen 1 has the cantilever rail and no vent ribs. Gen 2 has no rail and vent ribs.

Love my SLP comp. Shoots insanely fast and eats anything.

FN SLP is a solid gun. There are a good number of them in competition. Which should tell you something about the basic gun. Maybe not as many as M2's but a good amount. If I was looking for a competition gun, I'd be looking at the Benelli M2, FN SLP and the Remington Versamax which I've heard a lot of good things about lately.

I got the Blue FN SLP Competition couple years back when I had to wait almost a year to get it. Absolutely worth the wait, fastest cycling Shotgun I have and like better than the Benelli M4. It does get dirty and requires a more attention, but absolutely love it.
