Seems like most people prefer the super 90 line or the 870 line of shotguns. But is there any other shotguns that can match or come close to these options. As far as price for a HD shotgun.

Mossberg 500A....cheap cool reliable, and at 239 from big 5 really cheap.None of my posts are serious or real, nothing I post is legal advice.

Aren't the Super 90s a semi? Some don't want that for HD. And much more expensive than the 870, at least the Express model?
Want a pump? How about $425 for a Browning 12 BPS ga 20"?

Why? For the price, nothing beats an 870. Did you think to ask yourself "Hrmm, WHY do all these people only prefer a couple brands of shotguns?".Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

Nothing that I see. Just something I picked up doing my own research. Aside from expense, mostly the more complicated mechanism, I guess. Possibly more to go wrong. Definitely more to clean.
Admittedly, price and cleaning don't go directly to use for HD.
Are semis easy to find in 18" to 20"?Last edited by Brooke; 12-13-2008, 4:01 AM.Comment

If you check out the above links, your question gets answered
And the cost... it's cheaper than a new Mossberg 500. The Escorts are made by Hatsan. Great shotguns. Check out YouTube on stripping one, and some shows on firing it..."I don't know where you came from, and I don't know where you've gone

Semi-auto advantages:
- No risk of short stroking under stress
-- Easier for a smaller or weaker person to operate
- Can repeatedly fire with only one working arm
- Nominal recoil reduction
If the reliability of semi-auto actions were as realistic a concern as many people make them out to be, revolvers would dominate the personal defense handgun market. Just make sure you practice with a bunch of the exact type of ammo you intend to keep it loaded with, and if it always feeds reliably, you're good to go.Comment

bandogg,
this is a quote from somebody else that I fully agree with:
"'m not going to put down the 870 here, as it is one of the great American shotguns with millions having been sold over the years. Truly a great gun.
However, I'm always curious about the "Made in US" sticker and what it means to the American consumer.
As an importer, the bulk of our products are made overseas and have been for over 30 years. We were importing long before it became fashionable to be a part of the "global" economy. Our goal was, and continues to be, to bring the best value in a sproting firearm to the American consumer. I always felt that in a free market, whoever builds the right product at the right price, will get the business.
Now that we are building some of our product line here in the US (our CD Defense line of AR-15 rifles), I can see that it does mean a lot to the US consumer. But it also is not everything to the US consumer. Each month, Glock (Austria), Springfield XD (Croatia) and Taurus (Brazil) sell over 100,00 handguns in the US. That is each month! Add the other imports, just in handguns, from Sig, H&K, Beretta, Browning, Walther, Magnum Research, Charles Daly, Rossi, etc., and you can see that the American consumer is happy to purchase firearms made in countries around the world. The same applies in long guns with Anschutz, Beretta, Browning, Mossberg, CZ, Remington, New England, Savage/Stevens, S&W, Weatherby, Tikka, Sauer, Winchester, etc., and you see that the bulk of firearms sold in the US are made outside the US. Only one major manufacturer is completely made in the US, and that is Ruger. So again, obvioulsy, the American consumer is quite comfortable purchasing firearms from around the world.
Yes, Charles Daly shotguns are not made in the US. But that is nothing for us to be ashamed of. On the contrary, the US producer gets the business when he deserves it and the foreign maker gets the business when they deserve it. That's how my "free market" eyes see it.""I don't know where you came from, and I don't know where you've gone

The M1 Super 90, M2 Tactical, M3 Super 90/Tactical and M4 are all great shotguns.
If you're going to compare a Remi 870 to these then it would have to be a 870 Wingmaster, Marine or Police model. A Mossberg 590A1 (Heavy Barrel) would also be a good choice. The 870 Express and 500 are value models. You'll find most people have an 870 Express or a Mossberg 500A because they are inexpensive. Corners have been cut when compared to the higher-end models in the same line.
You probably want to include the Winchester Defender 1300/FN TPS as well. The Benelli Nova and Super Nova are also well built.
For other Semi's, the Browning that was posted before would be a good choice. The Browning/Winchester/FNH are all the same thing. Looks like the Browning is a stripped down Winchester SX2. The FN SLP would be another one.
Stoeger Model 2000 is available in an 18.5" with a pistol grip stock (MSRP $499) which is a good deal. Stoeger is related to Benelli and share the same inertia drive.
If you're not going to use the shotgun much and just keep it in the corner for HD, then it doesn't really make much sense to buy an expensive autoloader. Most people don't shoot their shotguns nearly as much as rifles or even handguns so finding a low-shot safe queen might be a good option if you want something like a M1 S90.Comment
