Browning A5 problem question

I bought an A5 that was in kind of neglected shape. I disassembled it and it appears to have never been cleaned. So I completely broke it down and cleaned it as best as I could. I lubed and reassembled it and have a problem.

With the bolt locked back, I load it. As soon as load one shell into the tube and the lifter lowers, the bolt releases and loads the shell.

What could be wrong?

Yeah, that is how it works.

That is what it should do. It's a speed load. Even the new A5 does it as well.

If you want to load shells into the tube then let the bolt drop and then load.

Good then. When it did it the first time, it startled the crap out of me. Definitely did not expect it.

Some A5s were designed that way. Older ones do not do that.

What really weirded me out was having to hold down the bolt release while loading a shell into the magazine on a 1947 vintage A5.

This one was manufactured in 1963.

I have a '56 and it scared me too the first time. There was a definite Ahhh! moment.
