Thank you Sir. We're sentimental fools so the gun being flawless and the same month & birthyear as my bride I'd be willing to dump some more cash into it so she can have a defensive barrel when I'm out of town.

A rifle sight smooth bore improved cylinder barrel with a magazine full of 20 GA #1 buck will just make me feel better when I'm gone.

Every shotgun for home defense does not need to be tacticool. I do not think a defensive / short barrel is always the answer. I am not sure if you are in a urban or rural setting, but my grandma in the 1960s had a 12 ga 'goose gun' with a 36 inch barrel.

OTOH, if my wife opens the safe, she grabs the AK

If you decide down the road that you need another barrel, a 3" N barrel should work on the 2-3/4" X frame, as long as you limit shells to 2-3/4". Same for the early 1100s, but don't loan the gun out to someone who might try to run 3" shells through it. I don't think I've ever actually seen a 3" barrel for a standard frame 870 20 ga.

In jr high I bought a 2 3/4" wingmaster and because it came with a 30" 3" barrel I didn't realize the receiver needed to say magnum to shoot anything other than 2 3/4" shells.
12 years later I noticed the bolt would open a 1/4 of the way after each shot. I sold it to a guy that said he had parts to fix it.
In addition to the 3" N suffix barrels I've also read model 58 barrels will work.
