Need to replace some 11-87 Youth Models with ?

    Hi all:

I am part of my local Scout Council and we are applying for a grant to replace our quickly dying Remington 11-87 Youth model shotguns.

    1. We need 20 ga. semi-autos that can stand up to abuse and not being cleaned often enough. We do clean them every time we use them but the same shotguns are also used for Summer Camp and Lease Camp where they are used by people who do not clean them or clean them correctly.

    2. I am very down on Freedom Group era Remingtons. My AOW Remington 870 was defective right from the factory, we had to fix a lot of little manufacturing defects that never would have occurred on a Classic era Remington 870.

    3. What recommendations do you have for a 20 ga. Youth Sized semi auto that can stand up to abuse and be reliable, long term? Personally, I would rather teach the kids using inexpensive break action single shots but the recoil would probably be too distracting, the semi auto does eat up a lot of perceived recoil. Frankly, a good portion of the Scouts I instruct are practically dwarf sized and cannot even hold up a 5lb youth size shotgun so a youth sized single shot 20 ga. would be lighter too, easier for them to heft, easier to clean, easier to maintain. But that recoil issue.

We had a Dad bring his wife's Baikal single shot 20 ga. at our last class. it was a piece of junk. My Brazilian made Kmart single shot 20 ga I bought 35 years ago was ten times better. The Baikal FTF over and over, unless you slapped the action closed just right, I am sure it needed work but it really turned me off of Baikals. Does anyone even make a good, reliable youth sized single shot 20 ga. anymore? I will probably get outvoted and forced to buy semi autos anyway.

Anway, I am rambling. Which 20 ga for Boy Scouts, many of whom are ridiculously small and frankly, weak, barely able to hold up a 5-6lb shotgun? I have a different perspective, at 13, I was six feet tall and weighed 160 so seeing 12 and 13 year olds who look to be under five feet tall and weigh perhaps 80lbs is strange to me. Guess people are shrinking?

I've been pretty set on getting my daughter a Winchester SX3 Compact, when she turns 12, next spring. Right now, she's about the size of your scouts.

However, I've recently started considering the Weatherby SA-08 Compact Synthetic.

The Weatherby might fit what your looking for. Maybe take a scout or 2 and check them out at a local shop.

I spoke with a fellow Calgunner who owns a shop yesterday and he gave us a really good price for the Weatherby. We'll see if the grant comes through. If it does, I am not inclined to replace our old Remingtons with new ones, the newer Remington guns tend to suck and have factory defects. The Winchester looks nice too, although at almost $1,100.00 each, even with a deal, I think those will be out of budget range.

What are other councils doing? I sent you info for Golden Empire coordinator a while back; maybe Dennis would have some useful info.

Whatever platfomr you choose, I wonder if you could leverage two or more councils buying to get better "group" price?

Having a Weatherby SA-08 20ga in my stable of shotguns, I can very strongly recommend them for your purpose. They are high value, quality guns, that will provide many years of reliable, easy-to-clean operation. And Weatherby stands behind their products.

              Good luck and safe shooting.

If you want something that you can neglect, well made so you don't have to mess with it, reliable and in 20 gauge for youth, then there's only 1 I know of: Benelli M2 Field Compact . Model number 11083.

Comes with 24" barrel and 5.6lbs in weight, it has the Comfortech storck, shim kit for adjustments, removable chokes, hard case and Crio barrel.

My wife use the 12 gauge version and it eats anything we feed it with. Due to the volume of shooting we do (trap shooting 2 to 3 times a week), I basically buy the cheapest stuff I can find in Walmart or online and the Benelli M2 has no problem with them.

Not sure he can do much better, I think he took out most of the margin but it never hurts to ask. If we get the grant, we are buying four. I'll let you know what happens and if the grant comes through, I'll get with you and perhaps a few other Councils to see if they want to go in and at least ask my friend.

MSRP on Benelli USA web site is $1,499. I got mine at around $1,200 via special order by a local gun store.

My uncle has a mossberg SA-20 that has been lights out since he got it. My sons were able to shoot with it at 8 years old. It his beater loaner shotty and was cleaned before each annual trip, not after. Never has it failed.

PS - Its CARPINCHO, not Capybara. They are tasty little critters when breaded and fried.

Just for informational purposes, the Mossberg SA20 is a rebadged Turkish shotgun.

I have been very pleased with the Escort Youth Model 20G Semi I bought for the wife. It has a pretty simple action with not a lot of parts to worry about. It's a gas gun so soft shooting and also has a huge recoil pad on it.
