Recommend for an 11 year old?

Had my nephew out a week ago. We shot some 22 on the rifle range at Sac Valley, then went over to the shotgun range so my brother and I could shoot a round of trap and skeet.

Talking to some club members, we decided to grab a box of 7/8 ounce loads and let me nephew try my 12G Rem-1100-Skeet since it is soft shooting anyways. I was concerned, because mine is the fixed skeet choke Skeet gun; figured it would be had with the open choke on the trap range.

My nephew proceeded to hit his first bird on trap, even with 7/8oz loads and a skeet choke. In fact, he hit 8 or 9 clays.

So then we moved to the skeet range, got him another box of 7/8oz shells, and shot St-1 and St-7. He did well St-7 low house, so threw a couple high house; he hit one of those. Switch to St-1, he hit a couple high house, and a low house.

He just loved it; liked it better than the 22 silhouette range, better than the 10/22 and AR. Now my brother is looking at shotguns...

What recommendation for an 11 year old to get into occasional clay shooting?

    I mentioned a 20g 1100 with a youth stock...

    Good suggestion.

My buddy has a weatherby 20 guage youth model. His daughter does well with it. They are around $400.

Here's a good gun that will last him and grow as he does. My kid shoots mine fine, though he does complain of it being a bit heavy. I have the 28" version, but they make a 26", too.

IF--IF the young man enjoyed the 12ga and he had no complaints, then a 12ga might be the way to go. However a 20 gauge is certainly a good option. Personally I would not go for a 16 simply because finding ammo for it is more difficult these days, at least anywhere around so cal.

Contact your local Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays ranges and ask if their is a resident instructor that can give a leeson and has the modified shotguns for an 11 year old. You will learn more in 1hr then days of asking on the net

If you strikeout cantact me and I'll be glad to help when I'm in the Sac area, normally late Oct-Jan

Yes, that was one of the first things I told my brother. There is a local range that has an instructor(Cordova Shooting Center). He is about 10 minutes from there.

He ran two boxes of 7/8oz loads thru my 1100 Skeet gun; it is stock including the metal butt plate... I could tell it was a bit heavy for him though. At the end, I was going to throw a double for him, but the 7/8oz loads would not cycle.

When I was 10 my old man bought me a 12ga Wingmaster (left handed even) so I could go duck hunting with him. Took me to the trap range at Chabot to learn how to use it. It seemed kind of big and heavy at first but I grew into it in about... 15 minutes

If he really likes it, go check out CYSSA. It's the big youth shotgun association in the state, although there are several others. Lots of dedicated coaches experienced in teaching brand new shooters. I just finished an NRA Level I Shotgun Coach class that was mostly filled with these volunteers, although I don't have a part in that group myself. It's a great thing to get a kid into.

I can speak first hand that the Weatherby sa-08 is a soft soft shooter. My daughter (13 years old) has one in 20 guage and handles it fine. I got her the compact/youth model. I asked to shoot it once and barely realized it went off when I pulled the trigger. It comes with a 24" barrel and you can buy a 26" or 28" as he grows. Just my lame 2 cents.
