    New 590a1 barrel surface rust?

I looked at my new unfired 590a1 and to my dismay, the chamber has orange brown surface rust. I scrubbed with a copper brush, solvent, oil, and cleaned with cotton patches. That process took about an hour. While improved, the chamber is still an orangish brown. I can't feel pitting but the chamber still looks unsatisfactory to me. The barrel itself looks like a sewer pipe when looking down from the top.

I searched the internet and this seems to be a common problem. When Mossberg sends a replacement barrel some complain the barrels are just as bad. I understand that this gun is not a beauty queen. But I think it should have better quality control. I should have inspected the gun a little closer when purchasing. I will most likely scrub again and shoot the crap out of it. It ain't a deal breaker for me. As long as it throws lead reliably, I can live with it.
Just check the bore a little more closely. What I thought was hardened grease was surface rust.

I wanted to spread the word to the rest who might be looking at a 590a1. I have the 20" barrel with ghost ring sites.

Sorry to hear that man, I was toying with the idea of getting one myself, just so I have a pump action shotgun (wife and I have our own semi-auto Benelli) to play with at the range.

Perhaps try using steelwool to polish the chamber and bore of the shotgun? You can get more details here: http://www.aiptactical.com/Page_2.html

Clean and lube it. Use a bore snake.

Throw a bunch of silica desiccant packets in your safe.

I'd be more worried about the malfunctions experienced in this video.

In that video, the bolt more than likely developed a bur in the firing pin hole. My old 500 did that, and would have periodic FTF and light primer strikes. You can file out the burr, but better to just replace the bolt.

Never had a rust problem in either of my mossbergs. I wonder if it is particular to the parkerized barrels?

Yikes, someone posted about their issue too. Back in 2013.

But wait wasn't the Mossberg the only one to pass the Military's trails? Thus making it uber-tactical and of mythic proportions?

OP try ultra-fine steel wool wrapped around a mop and chucked into a drill to polish the chamber.

As far as the FTF in the video, I believe it happens from excessive dry firing. The pin is not sprung(at least on my old Mossy), and can be struck too far forward without a primer to hit. My Moss was an old display gun at Turners, and had undoubtedly been dry fired hundreds of times before I bought it in '92. It was a late '80s model.

BE NICE Steve, they are allowed to rag on the 870 but we can't say anything about their Mossbergs even though they are Remington Model 31's.

OP - use steel wool around a wooden dowel and the barrel will look like it is chrome lined when your finish. Don't put any chemicals in it as they cook off and become gunk. Mine are dry, look chrome lined and always have for many years.

Afaik new production 590 bolts have a firing pin spring. The government contract ones also have the spring.

My 590's bolt and trigger group seem exactly the same as a government issued one.

OP, have you considered naval jelly? I haven't used it on guns yet, but that stuff attacks rust like stupid on the democratic national convention.

I can't help with the rust but try gun socks for your other guns and you will be satisfied , I use them and my guns still lubed when I check on them every time.

Well the new(?) Remy 887 with it's rotating bolt, seems to be at least partially a clone of the Win 1300. What's old is new!
