I've been having issues with my Mossberg 500 recently. It's not consistent but when I fire the first shot, the next round will eject out of the magazine tube, and fall on the ground before I can load it in the chamber. I have completely disassembled it and lubed/cleaned it but the problem persists. Anyone have any clue what's happening? I have replaced the magazine spring with the Wolff spring since the original spring got worn out. Thanks in advance

Mossberg 500 feeding problems

Your shell catches are sticking.
Remove trigger group, clean both catches and the grooves they are in, re-install.
Be sure that after the follower swings up above them, (move slide forward slowly and watch), they spring back inwards a little.
If your mag spring died, these may have gotten tired, too.
If they are properly installed, cleaned and lubed and still don't pop out, you can bend them a little or get new ones.

My wife's Mossberg .410 had this issue. It was new however and the shell catch hadn't been adjusted correctly at the factory. I broke it trying to get it adjusted but Mossberg CS sent a replacement that I got right the next time.
Since yours is apparently well used I would venture it might just need a good cleaning as ojisan has suggested.Comment

While the shotgun is together load a shell into the mag and see how much engagement the stop has on it's base. If it is barely touching then you need to adjust it for more engagement.Comment

I had the same exact problem. I tried cleaning to no avail. I sent it to Mossberg and they took care of it and had it back to me in 2 weeks. In addition to the two parts folks mentioned above, they changed out the trigger unit.RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.Comment

I had this problem as well (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=997876). It turned out that I had a defective cartridge stop. The replacement is on top, and the defective one is on the bottom. Note the lack of the pin on the bad one - that not being there allowed the stop to move on recoil, and drop rounds out of the mag tube.I've been having issues with my Mossberg 500 recently. Strange but neither my wife's original stop, the replacement Mossberg sent for her .410 nor the 20G stop they mistakenly sent as well had that pin on them.I had this problem as well (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=997876). It turned out that I had a defective cartridge stop. The replacement is on top, and the defective one is on the bottom. Note the lack of the pin on the bad one - that not being there allowed the stop to move on recoil, and drop rounds out of the mag tube.

The stop can't move rearwards under recoil since the rear of it butts against the rear of the slot it is placed in. The issue with my wife's (and possibly the OP's) was that there is too little engagement on the shell's rim and under recoil the stop will bounce out of the way, allowing the shell to exit the magazine and eject through the loading port since the shell lifter hasn't moved into position yet.
The solution was to VERY CAREFULLY bend the tip of the stop in front of the activation lug (the part poking out below the tip) slightly inward. Too far and it WILL snap, hence the replacements Mossberg sent me.
Once I did this my auto-eject problems totally ceased.Comment

"Defective" probably wasn't the right term. Regardless, the replacement part I got from Brownell's had the nub on there, and it did the trick. I had previously tried bending the original part, and it didn't fix the problem on any kind of consistent basis, sadly.Comment

Where were you "bending" it? You need to bend it right at the tip and not further down along it's length.
Before I found this out I had the same inconsistent results you mention.Comment
