    Browning inertia hammer problem

I have a belgium browning 20 gauge o/u superposed that I shot for first time today the inertia hammers are not working only shooting 1 barrel and not cocking second barrel. It is 65 years old in great shape but until today not fired for 20 years. Any ideas? Take stock off and clean and oil hammer/trigger group.

Yep my 20 ga went for years without a hitch then started not resetting, little clean and light lube and it's been good to go ever since.

After sitting 20 years, it should have been cleaned and lubed before you took it out. It doesn't take much to keep the inertia block from moving correctly...

Hard to get lube into hammer/trigger group area. I am going to try needle oiler first then pull the buttstock. Do you have a browning? very tight tolerances. My other 12 gauge superposed is 60 years old and never failed to function.

Pull the stock off, it's the only way to get it cleaned and lubed properly.
I don't own a Superposed, but I do own other O/U's Brownings included.
Barrels get cleaned after every outing, trigger group every 6 months...needed or not...

            These will help

This article will show how to clean and replace all common wear parts in the Citori receiver. No special tools or skills are necessary so anybody who is reasonably handy should be able to complete this job easily. Total time about one hour after you have done it once. Allow a couple of hours...

In a nearby thread we have been discussing failure-to-fire issues particularly in the lower barrel of the Browning Citori. One cause of this problem is weak firing pin hits on the primer due to dirt in the firing pin cavity which can reduce the strike force enough to dent but not fire the...

Since I don't know your level of knowlage...I'll have to start from A. First did you actully shoot a shell and the trigger did not reset for the secind barrel or did you just pull the trigger? Asking because this was the cause in the last two "trigger problem" posts. Fix, you need to tap the butt of the gun on the floor to simulate a shell being fired.

If you actully shot a live shell and it stuck...try working the barrel selector to the other barrel ...does the trigger work? Slap the butt plate or tap it on the ground ...did it switch to the other barrel? Repeat a few time and see if you can free up the sticky system...most likely old varnished oil sticking.

Don't pour oil in to the trigger area as it will soak into the wood and damage it over time.....Take the stock off and find the problem.

                ^^^^

This....oil has turned to a sticky substance called varnish by many. You will need to pull the butt stock and clean that up, then VERY lightly re-oil.

Switch oil!!! The oil turning to varnish and sticking everything together is why I switched to Mobile One 10-40 for my Gun oil. $6 a quart instead of $6 for 4 to 6 oz. and it's designed to desolve carbon and handle up to 400 degrees F. My friend had a Dan Wesson revolver that he hadn't fired in 20 years and the firing pin was so stuck in the frame from solidified oil that it wouldn't fire the ammo without multiple hammer drops. If you don't like that Idea, go with Froglube. it won't turn to varnish.

Good point, inertia hammers need inertia to reset for the second shot

Wait a second, maybe that's why they're called inertia hammers

Get that stock off. Locate your pendulum weight. Citori is pretty easy to break down the intertia mechanism...not sure on the superposed. If you don't feel comfortable pulling it apart, use your needle oiler and get some fresh oil there and work the pendulum.

I've had to do it to a Beretta Silver Snipe that sat for decades. A little gum or corrosion is all it takes.

I shot 2 rounds of skeet with it unlike some I have the sense to function fire a firearm not armchair attempt to figure out functions. I am pulling the stock this morning Since I posted I own another browning superposed I have shot without problems for 25 years I have decent level of knowledge. Just never had this happen before.

I cleaned the trigger/hammer group with solvent then oiled seems to work ok now.
